Huh?

Did I miss something obvious?

Every presidential election a bunch of bitter old conservatives write in Ronald Reagan.

I look foward to the day that the Republican party is so neutered that the write ins for Reagan exceed the votes for the GOP's - living - candidate.

That would be interesting. I find it disturbing so many Republican politicians name him as their favorite President; you would think they could not miss with Lincoln, but they are content to let him be associated with Obama--and thus, the Democrats.

I suppose it is political evolution: the weaker values die if they neglect to use enough intelligence.

Let's keep our fingers crossed. :)

The first one is highly suspect. 50,000 is about how many people died, in total, during the Nicaraguan conflict in the 1980s. I very highly doubt that the Contras were responsible for each of those deaths. A majority, sure, probably an overwhelming majority, but not all of them. And, while not nearly as brutal as the Contras, the FSLN weren't exactly angels, either (not that this justifies Reagan's actions vis-a-vis Nicaragua, of course). This is true, I should have qualified the number as I did with the Angolan Civil War.

As you have shown, Reagan is responsible, directly or indirectly, for hundreds of thousands of deaths. The Viet Nam War alone, which was at its zenith under LBJ and Nixon, killed many more than that. Then there was Nixon's support for the government of Pakistan during a time when the latter was slaughtering Bangladeshis by the millions.

If you measure a President's degree of evil by the number of deaths, Reagan would rank very highly, but I doubt he would rank first. While it is true that Nixon did support those people, it is hard to estimate the number of deaths that would have occurred without said support.

Fair enough. I'm not disputing your assessment of Reagan by any means; the man was responsible for unspeakable atrocities.
