Saudi Arabia has banned vehicle licence plates which are seen as "offensive" in English when Arabic letters are given in the Latin alphabet, reports say.

Saudi newspaper al-Watan said the banned words included "sex" and "ass", but the list was topped by "USA"...

Funny. 'USA' = 'lewd'? What do you think?

Presumably every country has its system of licence plates. Sometimes they can be fascinating; sometimes out of boredom from traffic some are forced to play games. (You know, one such game is to form words out of letters in licence plates, and so on) I remember when I was a kid I went to this city in which many of the car plates have with the same letter combination, so we made a contest in counting cars with plates starting with that combination.

I have never seen 'lewd' plates here, though most 'lewd' plates would most probably be those found in government, since the plates of government cars here start with the letter 'S'. Vanity plates are another matter altogether.

So what's the weirdest (or lewdest) car plate (vanity or otherwise) have you seen? Do you think it is worth spending extra for a vanity plate? What do you think should be on my plate this breakfast?

In belgium they have license plates with 3 digits and 3 letters. So it's possible to have "666 NSG" :D

Our plates are reverse. 3 letter 3 digits. It's possible to have NSG 666. I'll definitely look out for that, most likely it was registered decades ago and is sitting in a junkyard. :)

Almost looks like you could have it on a regular car, but shame its not possible on the British system, either one of the 3. (that includes NIre)

You'd have to pay a lot of money to get that as a personalised number plate. :(

I think it's much cheaper than it used to be.

No, but if you do get some make sure you spend an extra something on your insurance because your car is going to get vandalised a lot.

It could be possible...in March 2014.

Then again, they did ban BA57 ARD and BO08 IES a couple of years back.

I play 'road poker' on long trips. Each person gets 2 license plates from the next two cars that pass you (or you pass). Numbers are their own value, and vowels are like face cards with A being an Ace, and Y being the lowest, its 5 'card' so if for instance you had two plates GJY-325 and ABA-211 you would have two pair A's high (AA,22). And yes you can bet in this game.

Cool. Personally I tend to watch where I'm going on long trips, but that's just me. :p

I never see any funny number plates on cars. I can't really see some of the words that others are able to make out of a disjointed combination of letters and numbers, and I often feel left out.

Would that happen to be Mark Foley's car by any chance?
