President Obama Bows to Suadi King

I recently saw a news video clip of President Obama bowing to the king of Saudi Arabia. I can't really see that it was anything other than a bow. The Saudi king is not that short that the President needed to bend his knee and bow. There goes over two hundred years of the tradition of an American being equal to other peoples of the world.

OH MY GOD!!! OBAMA SHOWED RESPECT TO A FOREIGN LEADER! WHAT IS GOING ON?!? WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON?!?

Bow =/= saying youre not equal to someone. It is a dispaly of respect for that leader and is a traditions in Saudi Arabia.

But you know, youre right. Obama shouldnt have bowed to him to display respect. He should have kissed him.

How did we get to socialism and tax cuts? And as for the reason you would not care to listen to a viewpoint different from your own seems somewhat closed-minded and prejudiced.

But back on topic...

After over two hundred years of no American President ever bowing to another foreign head of state, along with the American Flag never being dipped to honor a head of state, was it proper for the President to bow to the King of Saudi Arabia? Was that the best way to show respect?

I was using it to make a point. The people who see something wrong with this are the people who are just so consumed with bitterness and hate, so angry that they are now in the minority, because the US got sick of the ideas that ran us into the ground, that they'll take anything, anything they can get their hands on and turn it into a reason why Obama has failed.

I disagree. We got to socialism because of an Imperial Democrat Congress and Republican President who didn't feel he had the strength to fight the war on terror abroad at the same time as fighting socialism at home.

I have also heard President Obama described as a savior, and as "Prince Charming" here on this forum. Seriously, the President is our nation's representative and most visible face to the world. His actions reflect upon the people of our nation.

Huh? "Imperial Democrat Congress"? That's worthy of a Danny Thomas spit-take. I didn't think the last Congress, the one that sat from 2007 to 2009, got anything done because of the Democrats' one-vote majority in the Senate and George Bush in the White House, but I guess I was wrong. Seriously, this bowing thing is not an issue. If it were full on genuflection รก la the Persian Empire (and I recall the kerfuffle when Alexander made the Hellenes do it, way back in the day) that would be an issue. If it were an actual ninety-degree tilt at the hips as opposed to a forty-degree forward inclination, that would be an issue. If Obama had got down upon his knee and bent his head to the King, that would be an issue (because it is utterly symbolic of submission to higher authority. That's why people do it when they get knighted). As it is ... not an issue. A little more respectful than a handshake, maybe, but not really actual symbolic submission to the King.

If Obama made other people bow to him, that would be an issue.

Yes, occasionally.

Some people don't deserve politeness. they deserve to be insulted and opposed. The Saudi King is one of those people, because of how he abuses his own people. The bowing to me seemed symbolic of how we are willing to compromise our democratic ideals for geopolitical expediency. I'm being too idealistic, I know.

Interesting idea ... something like the way Vatican City is separate from Italy, then? Unfortunately it would be very hard to impose ... quite apart from the religious legitimacy the House of Saud gains from controlling Mecca, the revenue from all those Muslims undertaking the Haj must be huge.

Come up with a solution for our dependance on oil and then we won't need to be on friendly terms with Saudi Arabia.

Again, I know Obama can't push all of that through as quickly as he'd like to or we need to. But that still doesn't mean he needs to bow to a tyrant like that. Remember, the Saudis need American money just as much as we need Saudi oil...

While I see where you're coming from, I'd argue that making enemies with despots and trying to force them to change is - in the long run - far morally worse than trying to do so on friendly terms. Or at least civil ones.

Mmkay. The OP belongs to the crowd that believes Obama can do no good, and will seek anything that would support this notion, however flimsy.

You, I think, were complaining about the crowd that believes Obama can do no wrong. See?

We got to Socialism and tax cuts from YOUR apparent closed mind and prejudice... There is nothing wrong with the American President bowing to another head of state. He is not the king of the world.I bow to no man.

Im not really sure why this is even an issue...So he bowed, thats how you pay respects to the Saudi Head of State....How would you feel if he refused to shake the President's hand?

What I really dont get is why the White House decided to cover it up, I mean, why not just come out and say that he bowed? I dont get it....

They just don't happen to be persons you would take time to listen to.

Most people with a functional brain generally don't take the time to listen to known liars like Rush Limbaugh. Sadly, not everyone has a functional brain, so we don't listen to that group either.

What about when an Arab leader wants to kiss you on the cheeks or hold your hand? It's customary and if you want to deal with them you better get use to those expectations. Remember when Bush had to dance with a sword in his last trip to Saudi Arabia?
