What's with all the shootings?

It seems like there's been an explosion of people going into places and shooting them up. Shooting at a nursing home, INS office, etc. What is the cause for the recent rise in shootings?

In my opinion, I think it's the economy. People that have been doing well are now finding themselves without jobs, and they're losing everything that they've ever worked for. So they just snap, they don't see a way out, so they decide to go the "Take out as many people before I take myself out" route.

Thoughts?

I think it always happens and that right now it's getting ratings so they are reporting on it a bunch.

Something to do with the proliferation of hideous wallpaper. That's what I heard.

Eh I dunno, I'm still going with economic hardship. It's a drastic change, and not everyone can handle that very well.

This too. They're trying to build a myth around the current recession, like CEOs leaping from buildings during the Great Depression, which never actually happened.

I concur with Wilgrove.

So - you think they're making up these shootings?

I'm going with the idea that people are seeing everything going down the toilet, and it's breaking their fragile little minds. The guy who loses his job, and then shoots a load of people seeking citizenship? It seems like blaming immigrants for his job loss - which, while maybe not entirely rational - at least follows a kind of broken logic.

Not the shootings themselves, of course. They happened. You can have a "myth" surrounding an actual occurrence. There's a great deal of discretion involved in reporting the news - what to say, how much time to dedicate to each story and how to frame the issue. It's being framed as a reaction to the economy, even if the perpetrator had a history of mental illness or violence.

In what way is it being framed as a reaction to the economy? Becuase it's being reported NOW, while the economy is bad?

The Media sells what sells. If people buy copy that has mass-shootings on the cover, then every media source will profile bloodspatters and crumpled bodies. That's not because of ANY 'agenda' of the media, except being a consumer friendly unit shifter.

I blame the cowboy myth, this idea of the heroic lone ranger with everyone stacked up against him and only a gun to make things equal.

I have seen the shootings framed as reactions to the economy a dozen or so times in the last week, not including in blogs and on message boards. This was one I noticed this morning:

I'm not doing media analysis. I'm just dubious that the economy is to blame in these cases.

Wasn't that guy an immigrant himself?

People on meds -> lose job -> lose health insurance -> people off meds -> go crazy -> shoot people -> in prison - > back on meds.

It's one of those circles.

In my opinion it is because the radical right wing has gone absolutely fucking insane since Obama was elected.
