Same Sex marriage

There has been a lot of talk about homosexual marriage recently due to Vermont and Iowa legalizing it. So: same-sex marriage YAY or NAY?

You're not picturing homosexuals as child molesters who'll also turn your children gay, or lesbian gym teachers who'd watch your little daughter in the showers.

When I think of them, it makes me want to vote 'yay' because not all of the children in the world are heterosexual. Some are homosexual, bisexual, transexual, asexual, or some other variation. It is only fair that they all have equal rights to look forward to upon reaching age of majority.

It should be allowed. How allowing a same-sex couple to sign a piece of paper that (in the United States, anyway) grants 1138 specific rights at the federal level (source: GAO 2003 report on the subject) and more at the state level has anything to do with religion is beyond me.

In fact, the many legal and financial rights associated with marriage are not even conveyed by the Christian faith - but by the state.

Something I just discovered; Louisiana, not satisfied with amending its constitution to outlaw same-sex marriage and all other forms same-sex union, went a step further and created something called "covenant marriages", a kind of conservative ultramarriage that's harder to get out of (at least in states that recognise covenant marriages). It is, at least, opt-in, and you can still marry normally (providing your partner is of the opposite sex, of course).

Abuse, felony with jail time, or adultery. Essentially removing the whole irreconcilible differences from the table. Find out your husband is a colossal prick, and lazy to boot? Better cheat on him.

A shallow collection of water?

It's a 'puddle'; a collection of water on the ground following rain fall, for example.

Ok, so since I have a morbid sense of curiosity, what are the grounds that will allow you to get out of a Covenant Marriage?

Adultery, being convicted of a felony with jail time or abuse.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Covenant_marriage

Basically, anything that would be considered "fault" grounds in a regular divorce.

Abuse, felony with jail time, or adultery. Essentially removing the whole irreconcilible differences from the table. Find out your husband is a colossal prick, and lazy to boot? Better cheat on him.

Just don't have the partner in on it otherwise you could be found guilty of connivance. And don't forgive abuse then try and use it as grounds, because then you've got to deal with the possibility that the judge will find that you're in condonation of the action.

Well I might as well try and put this thread to good use by changing the subject to gay divorce. In the UK a civil partnership cannot take place on the grounds of adultery because there is a legal anomaly that gay and lesbian sex is not counted as adultery. Well at least according to a divorce lawyer of my acquaintance. Seems a bit of a Clinton argument about what counts as sex...

As long as people are above the age of consent, I really don't care who they get it on with and where. Even if I did think homosexuality was immoral (I don't), I wouldn't make myself moral policeman for the bedrooms of the world.

But, c'est la vie. Here in the states, all our politicians are too afraid to challenge the status quo. More liberals than conservatives support gay rights, but no liberal leader has ever taken a stance to improve the lot of gays, except in the military, where they can now die IF they're in the closet. Still, the only thing Republicans CAN do is mess with the marriage laws, which doesn't stop the humping.

Then again, they may need to change their policies if a few more homosexual bishops turn up.

I truely don't support or endorse homosexuality. I don't see how it came to be either. I have never read anything that was based between Ancient times to the 19-century with a homosexual couple. I grew up knowing people marry into man & woman relationships.

But if the world comes to this, what can you do?

It would be very easy to use that argument to support same sex marriage. After all, the few generations have fought for different rights so their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren (etc)... could vote, run for office, go to mixed-race schools, protest together, express themselves freely, have control over their own sexual reproduction, be able to make their own religious choices. The list goes on.

I always think of the children being raised by homosexual couples in which one parent (a) has no legal authority in raising the child and (b) is not held to any legal responsibilities if the couple breaks up.

Seems to me that those children need protecting too, don't they? Maybe we should legally recognize their parents the same way we would if one of them happened to be the opposite sex.

absolutely yah. society NEEDS for individuals to have sexual release to counteract excessive levels of ambient aggressiveness (which make the world a more brutal and dangerous place). but it SERIOUSLY does not need, for the human species to survive it seriously needs a reversal of instead, any more increase in human population.

gay merrage is one of the very few nondraconian means of meeting both these real and pressing needs.

to oppose it under today's conditions in today's world is totally illogical, irrational, and absolutely down right irresponsible.

Erring on the side of caution, maybe. I know a very conservative girl who steadfastly opposes things like gay marriage, and the right to choose... but she's an engineer.

But, it certainly looks like, the more educated you get (in general) the less you care to fuck other people around. Statistically.

(And, yes, I appreciate that education and intelligence aren't necessarily linked).

Yes. If everyone was well-educated, this country would be sublime.

(And, yes, I appreciate that education and intelligence aren't necessarily linked).

I believe part of intelligence is the ability to learn--of course, if one is never taught certain things, than there would not be a proper correlation between intelligence and knowledge, which is what allows racists to call certain groups inherently stupid. Damn Ayn Rand and her "wealth is the manifestation of intelligence".

Yeah, I think Ayn Rand had it somewhat backwards - wealth MANIFESTS in education... and intelligence tends towards education as well (I think).

Some of those who voted No really aren't against it. This guy, for example,
That's why I voted Nay. I support legal rights for homosexuals, however I am a heterosexual and I would probably refuse to perform a marriage ceremony for a gay couple
apparently really does favor legal marriage for us, only opposing religious ceremonialization of such marriages.
And then there's this guy, who cast the first No just to get it off zero:

I saw Luna's post, though I must have missed Korintar's. Technically, he's correct; the separation of church and state does of course go both ways. We have no grounds to force a church of any religion to recognize a same-sex marriage, just the same as we have no grounds to deny same-sex couples the exact same civil marriage benefits given to heterosexual couples.
