Well NSG, how tall are you? I'm 6'1.

Im honestly 6-4 , ive looked it up and 6-4 is 99.5th percentile of height in the US, and when i walk into a large room filled with people im almost always the tallest in the room. Yet when this question comes up on the internet, CONSISTENTLY im a tad on the high to average side with all the other answers. It cracks me up.

I don't find the poll results particularly anomalous. My boss is 6'4 or thereabouts, his brother is about 6'2, I've got two cousins in the 6'2-6'4 range, the aforementioned deputy is 6'7. Granted there's a self selection bias, but that doesn't mean in this particular instance anyone is lying.

Strangely, I've failed to measure much fluctuation (I'm pretty much always within an eighth inch either way), which is probably a function of not measuring that often, but normally, height fluctuates by a half inch or so. You compress and decompress the spine while asleep and awake.

Way back, I started off playing dwarves, but back then, I wasn't fully grown. When I play humans, I tend default to ones that are on average my height. In that particular group, I play a human that's about my height, which means he's bigger than all the small nonhumans and smaller than all the big nonhumans in that group.

When I play larger-than-human races, I tend to make them taller and thinner than average. The short races I mix it up a lot.

In a bit of wishful thinking I will put myself in the taller group then.

I had the same feelings when I went through Germany and Amsterdam. I read somewhere that the average height of Dutch men is 6'2". That's the average. I'm 6'2" myself and prior to my travels through those countries, I had spent a few months in Southern China where the average height for women must be around 5'2" and for men, maybe 5'6" (Cantonese are the shortest Chinese; some of the far Northern - above Beijing - Chinese are actually quite tall, around 6'). So it was quite disorientating to suddenly go from being the tallest by a good 1/2 foot and having people faces bounce off my chest or shoulder as I walked down the street to cowering in the shadow of some huge ubermensch.

According to the National Center for Health Statistics the average American male is 5 feet 9.1 inches and average female is 5 feet 3.7 inches.

If your going to consider that on this website there are more men then women, the 5-8 to 5-10 number would be the median on the bell curve. Statistically all people measured combined would be well below 5-8 on national average but just for sake of argument(and the fact that there are more male posters then female) we will go with the higher 5-8 to 5-10 number. The people below that median height in the poll number 35. The people above the 5'-10"figure is 58, which is 75% higher than 35 instead of being nearly the same.

Conclusion: People lie about their height and add several inches on average. I have seen this same behavior duplicate itself on the internet time and time and time again. And also its not always alot of people telling little lies, remember that a person who is 5-4 but says hes internet 6-4 takes one number away from the below the median and adds another to above the median in the count.
