As far as soft drinks, I always kinda liked Coke with Lime. And I can never fucking tell whether they produce Vanilla Coke anymore, but it was awesome.

I'm not sure if they still sell vanilla coke down here, but it lasted a lot longer than lemon coke, which I resent. Because vanilla coke tasted awful, whereas lemon coke was delicious. Fortunately you can create it yourself with lemon juice and ordinary coke, and - in some strange twist of fate - I am drinking such a concoction right now. An odd coincidence.

Of course I do and also remember the refillable glass bottles. Ahh the good old days. There are bottlers that still use cane sugar instead of the high fructose corn syrup. Hawaii Coke and Pepsi bottlers make their products with Cane sugar. It tastes so much better that way I think.

High fructose corn syrup is a mainly US phenomenon, it is due to US agricultural subsidies to American corn farmers. Most of the rest of the world uses real sugar. I can't speak from direct experience, not having drunk the corn syrup sort, but from what I've read the corn syrup is both worse for you and tastes worse than the sugar sort.

Yes and yes. I worked for Pepsico International. We had meetings concerning production costs of Soda outside of the US/Canada vs in the US/Canada. The reason for the use of HFCS is because there is ample supply in the US/Canada and it save nearly .05 for the company per serving vs real sugar. Now if you add all those servings together it is a massive savings for a nation the size of the US.

In soda the taste difference is almost non existent, because they invert sugar.
HFCS will be 50% fructose 50% glucose
Inverted cane sugar will be 47.5% fructose 47.5% glucose and 5% sucrose.

Now in other cooking needs there is a much more noticeable difference.
How process foods get around this by just putting in more HFCS so you get overwhelmed by the sweetness.

In the early 2000s, deep fried chocolate bars (including Snickers, and Mars bars) became popular at U.S. state fairs and also in Australia, although they had been a local speciality in some Scottish fish and chip shops since at least the late-1980s in spite of containing over 850 calories per bar when prepared in this fashion.

Fried Coke!? WTF??? :eek2:

It's something recent, and it's slightly misleading.

Fried Coke

Fried Coke is frozen Coca-Cola-flavored batter which is deep-fried and then topped with Coca-Cola syrup, whipped cream, cinnamon sugar, and a cherry. It was introduced by inventor Abel Gonzales, Jr., at the 2006 State Fair of Texas, where it won the title of "Most Creative" in the second annual judged competition among food vendors.[1][2] It proved very popular in Texas, selling 10,000 cups in the first two weeks, and is now being adopted as a snack by fairs in North Carolina, Virginia and Arizona. It is also very popular in California.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fried_coke

DALLAS -- There are fried Twinkies and even fried candy bars.

Now, vendor Abel Gonzales Jr. has come up with a new artery-clogging concoction for the State Fair of Texas. It's fried Coke.

Gonzales deep-fries Coca-Cola-flavored batter. He then drizzles Coke fountain syrup on it. The fried Coke is topped with whipped cream, cinnamon sugar and a cherry. Gonzales said the fried Coke came about just from thinking aloud.

Gonzales' diet-buster wins the creativity honor at the second-annual Big Tex Choice Awards Contest.

Judges for the contest chose Shirley London's Fried Praline Perfection as the tastiest fried delicacy.

The two won out among 26 entries such as fried macaroni and cheese and a deep-fried cosmopolitan.

London said she came up with the fried pralines idea after buying pralines at the fair last year. She plans to sell the pralines alongside fried marshmallows.

Gonzales achieved notoriety in 2005 with the fried peanut butter, banana, and jelly sandwich -- selling an estimated 25,000 of the treats, according to the fair's Web site. The site said London got media attention in 2004 with her fried marshmallows on-a-stick.

This is the same state fair that brought about the corn dog. The Web site said Neil and Carl Fletcher conjured up a sweetened corn-battered wiener on-a-stick and sold it for 15 cents during the 1942 State Fair of Texas.

The fair begins Sept. 29.

It's owned by Tootsie now. Don't know if they still do the comics, but I kind of doubt it.

Edited to ad:

http://www.bubblegum-comics.com/FleerFunnies.html
Fleer Funnies
Dubble Bubble gum was the home to Pud and his pals. In their own way, these comics are every bit as fascinating as Bazooka Joe, and they've been around much longer actually! Fleer Funnies has a rich history dating back to the 1930's. If not the first, they were certainly one of the first to include comics with their gum, Dubble Bubble. Their first series of comics featured original characters, 'Dub and Bub'. Another early series of comics featured stick people. Eventually, Fleer developed a winning cast of characters for it's comics including their icon, Pud. Originally, Pud was much more rotund than the slimmed down version we see in the 1960s and later.

The early comics were especially large and colorful. They included Fleer Fortunes and Dubble Bubble Facts. They were also sequentially numbered which makes collecting them easy. They are not dated though, so it's difficult to know the exact year of release. By the late 1950s, early 1960s, Fleer Funnies shrank to the small size most people remember. Last time I looked, you could still find comics with the gum. Pud has been slightly redesigned and the comics are printed blue ink on white instead of full color. More than 1,002 comics have been released over the years. Collect them all!

Is anyone else here old enough to remember when soft drink companies used real sugar, and not that awful "high-fructose corn syrup" crap? That was long before my time, unfortunately.

Depending on the specific bottler, they still do. The Doctor Pepper plant in Dublin, Texas for instance uses only Imperial Cane Sugar for their drinks.

It would make me think they could open a "Premium" line with Cane Sugar and charge like .25 extra, and make a killing..

They have, it's called Pepsi Natural. It tastes good too.

You might not be able to....

Pepsi Natural: "a new cola made with only natural ingredients", released in select markets in 2009. Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Pepsi_types)

....or you could go to England (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pepsi_Raw).

From Wiki
It is available in a 300ml glass bottle and a 250ml aluminium can from limited outlets, including Waitrose/Ocado, Sainsbury's and Boots in the United Kingdom.
