The trillion dollar ad campaign

Not Pepsi, coca Cola or McDonald's have the most expensive advertising campaign but... wait for it... a Zimbabwean newspaper called 'the Zimbabwean' (for additional hillarilty, it seems to be hosted in the UK). The billboards and murals are made of real money. Also real Zimbabwe Dollar notes are stamped sith ad messages are used as flyers. Apparently, using banknotes is less expensive than using normal paper.

Isn't this an awesome campaign?

and, more important: what can be done against the rampaging hyperinflation?

Drop the requirement for the Z-Dollar to be used as legal tender, and allow some other currency (US Dollar or Euro most likely) to be used instead. They've done that to some extent now.

Now all they need to do is phase out the Z-Dollar entirely and give up independent monetary policy. They can reintroduce their own currency a few years from now, once things have calmed down.

Of course you'll still have high, and perhaps rising, prices even in US Dollars, because the supply of things like food and fuel is shrinking, but it wouldn't be anything like we're seeing now.

Since February, this is done. US Dollar or South African Rand are widely used instead.

For the rest... Gono will NOT like the idea...

Yah. But the day after the only man who can make that decision makes that decision, his head will be on a pike.

And from what I understand the little trade that is left in Zimb isn't conducted in Zimb dollars. Of course the corruption is legendary, so that too is screwing the whole thing up.

But this should be yet another lesson to people. There should be a complete firewall between government and banking.

I fear THAT as well! It probably does not help that Gideon Gono thinks God is on his side.

So long as governments can make laws to regulate banking that is impossible.
Even in the US we can give draft rights for 2 trillion dollars at the drop of a hat.

Bizarre as it seems, I was once told that countries should do more of that, especially the United States.

Well depends on the terms of borrowing. For the most part up until now the borrowed money was available at interest rates less then the average rate of growth. Basically making the money easier to pay back then when it was loaned. This was because China felt the need for large foreign exchange reserves. They had actually been warning us that they were approaching the reserves they needed for the last few years. We should have been reducing our borrowing during those years.

What it will really take is an assassination and rebellion to boot the old government and start a new, more productive, more restricted, less restricting government.
