To do what makes you happy, and fuck anyone that tries to get in the way. If you want to work hard and make money, go for it. If you want to live a hedonistic life enjoying its pleasures, go for it. If you want to discover new things and enrich human knowledge, go for it. If you want to create works of art and enrich human culture, go for it. If you want to have a family and devote your life to ensuring the best life for your children, go for it. Anything and everything is good in my opinion so long as you're happy and you respect the right of others to pursue their own meaning. You're not going to be rewarded with anything besides misery and ennui if you try to live according to the whims of others; while the market certainly puts constraints on what is possible, that doesn't mean you can't smash your way through its shackles and become something more.

The most important thing to remember is that you should never really give a fuck what others think of you; maybe play along and show them what they want to see until you've got the power to disregard them, but never give up on your own goals and dreams. It is better to be poor and in control of yourself and your actions than to live the life someone else wants you too...the lack of freedom is nothing better than meaningless death.
