Gunman takes hostages in NY State

Up to 40 people have been taken hostage and several others shot in the US state of New York, say reports.

Local media reported that the people had been taken hostage in the buildings of the American Civic Association in the town of Binghamton.

Mayor Matthew Ryan told the Binghamton Press & Sun Bulletin that the man had a high-powered rifle.

One report said four people had been carried from the scene on stretchers. Details are still emerging.

The newspaper said homes nearby were being evacuated and a police commando unit was at the scene.

Seeing as this is only a few minutes old, I can't really comment, but I thought I'd post it anyway.

I'm glad that kind of thing doesn't happen here. Without meaning to sound too cheesy, I hope it's over soon.

Without being able to add anything truly constructive, since all I've seen of this is this thread, I hope the situation is resolved quickly, without any further bloodshed, and those touched by this tragedy manage to overcome.

More than likely I'm sure they're either talking to the Culprit, or that he has killed him self and they are not sure if they want to risk entering the building.

Twenty people apparently have left, though they haven't disclosed whether or not they were "released" or if they just left on their own. He's either holed up with the rest in a smaller part, being paranoid like he should, or who knows.

More or less the dramatic part of this all seems to be well and over with.

Sadly, you are correct.

These people that shoot up public places need to think about people actually suffering, you know, like in Bangladesh. Imagine if you were dirt poor, lived in a little wooden shack (if you're lucky) had no clean water, barely could get food, and disease was rampant. Even then, you have no right shooting up innocent people.
