She touched the Queen! Never mind that the Queen touched her first. Never mind that, as First Lady of the US, she could, theoretically, be considered the Queen's equal (never mind that, as an American from the US, she would, by US convention and tradition, be considered to be anyone's equal). The American First Lady touched the Queen and this, apparently, is an intolerable breach of protocol and tradition.

I think there is something to be said for maintaining a healthy respect for the monarch, even if she is merely a figure-head.

Whether being forbidden to touch her or not is a good idea can be argued, but I think the queen should be the one to say "to heck with this" and until then everyone whether they be the theoretical equal to her or not should respect that.

Actually since the 1812 war began as an attack of the US on Canada, the US lost.
Also, since the 1812 war can also be seen a part of the Napoleonic wars, with the US being on France's side more or less (as they were in 1784), the US lost.

Um no she is not the Queen's equal Michelle would in fact be Prince Phillips equal. The Queen and Barack are equal to each other both being the head of state of their respective countries.

As for your claim considering she is from the US and by US convention, well she isn't in the US is she, they were in the UKand thus should be following UK convention.

I do think it could be made into a bigger thing then itis. Back in the early 90's the Queen visited Australia and our PM a the time put his hand around her. There was a problem the Queen didn't seem to mind but the media certainly like to make storms in teacups.

Saudi Arabia has oil.

It is appropriate that the US president bows.
No. Not appropriate.

Before anyone asks, yes I'd be this pissed if Bush did it, obviously.

In truth, for possibly the first time ever, I agree with you.

The pomposity of kings and queens ought to be pricked at every opportunity, be they Saudi, British or Thai.

You know...it's rather refreshing to see the Obamas acting natural, and humble. Not humbled...but rather, not arrogant. President Obama is the leader of what continues to be, like it or not, one of the most powerful nations on the planet. That neither he, nor his wife, seem to need to put on airs only makes them look more confident in that fact. So she put her arm around the Queen in a very human gesture, after she herself was touched. So he bowed to the King of Saudi Arabia. Too forward? Too self-effacing? Pfft. Protocol is important, yes, but I think they're both pretty good at just doing what seems natural at the moment. Once again...refreshing.

I would hardly say that the US kicked ass in 1812. It was more of a draw where the only real losers were the indigenous peoples.

Actually, it was a comment on another post. Someone mentioned two wars we had fought with the British. Someone else questioned this. I thought that the first poster might be referring to the Revolution and the War of 1812, since those are the only two wars that I recall the US fighting against the English. And yes, I know that the only reason the British made a treaty with us was that they were engaged elsewhere in conflicts that were significantly more important to them than we were - they could have, indeed, walked all over us if they'd wanted to. Also, I personally, believe that the War of 1812 was really an extension of the Revolution, unfinished business one might say -so it wasn't really two wars, it was just one with a long hiatus between battles.

Far worse than that ignorant broad violating protocol is Barack Hussein Obama bowing to a Moslem potentate:

http://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2009/04/obama_bows_down_to_saudi_king.html

No way to see that coming, was there?

Yeah, why the fuck is he bowing to them?

He should be kissing him!

:D
I just watched the video linked to it and Obama really did bow . . . not just nod his head, but like bow almost to a 90 degree angle, in front of the King of Saudi Arabia . . . that is fucking ridiculous.

American leaders should not bow to Arabian Kings. That shows them that they are higher than our leaders are and that they have power over our leaders, intrinsically.

Yeah, what a fuck. Showing respect to foreign leaders!

You know man, we dont rule the world yet.

Even if we did, a little respect is due - not obsequious behavior, but some respect. We should remember that old saying about those people you step on on your way up being those you pass on your way down.

Lol. The Queen isn't above anyone, so anyone can touch her, so long as they aren't doing said touching in an inappropriate way.

wot, no tongue? what a disappointment - the queen is hot stuff.

as a side note, the Obamas are being really stingy with their gifts. i think the rule is, if its a gift that I could give the queen/PM/president/whatever, then its a pretty shitty gift from a political leader

I don't get it. It's not as if the Queen will crumble if you touch her. In fact, she's not someone you'd want to mess with. I mean she's quite a good shot with a shotgun and she's not afraid to break a few necks if she has to. If Mrs. Obama had actually done anything wrong my adivise to her would be stay out of any tunnels when travelling in France

An uneducated British Citizen evidently. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commonwealth_of_England)

I'm afraid that was only a temporary thing as we were stupid enough to invite them back. Also while everybody else went for liberty, fraternity and democracy, we got a madly religious dictator with the only major alteration being a different title.
