Israel's new ultra-nationalist foreign minister has said it is not bound by a US-sponsored 2007 agreement to reach a peace deal with the Palestinians.

"The Annapolis conference, it has no validity," Avigdor Lieberman said in his first speech since taking office.

He was speaking at a handover ceremony at the foreign ministry, prompting his predecessor Tzipi Livni to interrupt and diplomats to shift uncomfortably.

"There is one document that obligates us - and that's not the Annapolis conference, it has no validity," Mr Lieberman said.

Presumably the document he refers to isn't one written by the Dalai Llama or his new glossy page copy of "Watchmen" either.....

Of course this means that shares in CRH and Catterpillar will probably rise...Every colonisation has its silver lining and all that.

The document is definitely a new copy of the hit novel "Twilight". *nod*

But seriously, investing in Caterpillar would be a good call...what with the inevitable invasion and subsequent bulldozings which ensue...

Obama isn't a dictator. He doesn't have the capability, something like that has to come from Congress. But I agree, giving Israel 80 billion dollars a year is a waste.

30 billion over 10 years.

Foreign policy is one of the things the president has the most control over.

We subsidize their government for three billion, yes. But that's only part of the eighty billion we give them. It isn't just monetary subsidy, but also in tangible assets such as weapons, training, and other military hardware that we give them.

And yes, the president has foreign policy control to a point, but treaties, and their termination, must be approved by congress.

And the baseball bat isn't really a baseball bat...but rather a boomstick used to fend off sharks.

That's not enough I say. The teacher should hand baseball bat kid a hand grenade, pin pre-pulled and already cooked for four seconds.

Or maybe a rabid badger.

Why not both? A rabid badger with a hand grenade taped to it's back. ;)

Actually, I think I have a better idea. Give the friendless kid a water pistol, and the put in the hand of other kid a lit stick of dynamite covered with fast acting superglue.

Yet 4 out of 4 of them are essentially now represented internationally by the shite. Mind you, he's only actually saying what hes thinking, as oppossed to the usual 'platitudes and bulldozers' approach.

Damn, the next few years are going to be tough for me on NS.

I do have a good reason why the US shouldn't cut all funding to Israel immediately - we do that, Israel might stop supplying us with 90% of our intelligence in the Middle East.

Instead, the US should try to work more subtly - threaten to cut the amount of money sent.

Another idea would be to deliberately ignore Lieberman as much as possible. Obama should try to deal with Netanyahu directly. If the US snubs Lieberman a few times, it might lead Netanyahu to find someone else for the job.

My hope is that this coalition falls apart after a year, forcing new elections.

How would that solve anything? There are elections there seemingly every 18-24 months.

I think we're rich enough to make up the difference, not that there's all that much we need to know.

"Aye some people are vaguely plotting against you, great satan etc. etc."
"Yeah anything which poses a genuine risk to our way of life?"

Yeah, and then you just get another set of results like these, because the general public is kind of split on what to do, and since Sharon's been out of the picture there's been no leader figure to rally around. The President was until recently a sex criminal who wouldn't step down because then he'd have to go on trial. Bebe and Olmert are pretty unloveable chaps, after all.

The 3 billion is only for the military Bush cut the government/economic funding already. Before the cut we were giving closer to 4 billion total.

Yeah. Like participating in possible war crimes, she got that done alright.
