Drive through apartment, and why I'm awake at 5 am (w/ pics)

So, I was enjoying a good night's sleep, when what I thought was an explosion went off. My room shook, and the noise woke me out of a deep sleep. While it wasn't an explosion, it was a vehicle crashing through the wall of my apartment building (Chevy Cavalier, to be specific). It took out the power in my apartment (not sure how, maybe a short due to broken wires), and now I'm sitting at my parents house at nearly 5 am wondering where I'm going to be living for at least the next few weeks (my parents house is too far from the post office I work at, to commute on a daily basis). I'm pretty sure that I'll have to permanently move out of that apartment, due to the damage to the building, but I don't think I'll just be able to move into another apartment in the complex (this is the second major issue my roommate and I have had in this complex, and the property manager doesn't like us).

Just so this doesn't seem like a completely bloggy post, has anyone ever had a major problem like this, and how did you deal with it.

It's fortunate you're fine, but I've got to ask. It looks like a good 10-15 feet to the nearest curb. How the heck did someone reverse that much into a brick wall without realizing it? Drunk? High? Or just outright retarded?

I've had something vaguely similar happen. My wife and I built a fort in our livingroom (it was awesome... don't judge), and all of a sudden, in the middle of the night we hear a crash like thunder. I look out the window and I see a car had crashed into a hydrant right near our house (on the other side of the road/median). So I go out there, and one of the neighbors had already called 911... the guy, I'm not sure what the deal was, must have been cruising, he didn't seem that injured but he was either doped up, drunk, or in extreme shock, he didn't respond (but was clearly living, and again, no severe injuries) to anything, and his car was extremely mangled.

I assume it had something to do with intoxication of some form... it's not like they put hydrants that close to the roads, and the speed limits only 45.

Also, you have my consolation, I'd offer you a ride to work, but I'd imagine it's relatively infeasible.

Unfortunately, crashing at my friends place isn't an option (my friends that live the closest to me have an infant, and another friend that lives in the area, his wife, and kids live at his in-laws).

There's some ruts from the car's tires (it's hard to see in the pictures). I was told the driver was asleep when he crashed, so I'm assuming that's why the lawn isn't tore up more (from him attempting to correct his out of control car).

Wow. Isn't physics amazing?

I remember when my mom had an accident on an icy road: Her car spun out of control and hit a telephone pole. Then it spun 360 degrees and hit the same telephone pole a second time on with the opposite side of the car. I'm assuming that the back end of that car hitting the side of your apartment building with that much force is another example of physics gone nutty. He must've been carrying quite a bit of momentum. Maybe he was dreaming of driving in NASCAR.

Or maybe he was just drunk as a skunk. How close to bar-closing time did that happen?

If I lived in a monolithic dome, the car probably would have bounced off the dome. They're tough enough to survive direct hits from tornadoes, earthquakes, forest fires, etc, so it'd laugh off a Chevy Cavalier.

I'll have to take pictures in a couple of hours, as right now they're inspecting the building, and I don't want to get in the way (there looks to be serious structural damage, as that is a load bearing wall). Also, I have no tortoise of my own.

I talked to one of my friend's brothers, who I've known for a long time (we don't really hang out much, though). He offered up his spare room for a few days, and he lives relatively close.

Odd how? Is it because I blacked out everyone's faces? The shadows match up (between the light source and the people/objects in the photos), and how do you account for the emergency personnel there? They don't stay at fake crash sites, and they're still there once the car is gone.

The fact is that car did plow through that wall, and ended up exactly as it shows in the pictures. The only photo manipulation I did, as I said before, was to black out everyone's faces.

Mainly, the small size of the hole and the fact that the car doesn't look like a toy that someone's hit with a very large hammer.

That said, with April Fools' Day well and truly over, if you are still standing by your story then I'm happy to take it on trust. Maybe car vs brick wall crashes are different in the US. Something in the mortar, perhaps.

In which case, please accept my apologies for not believing you in the first place, and my best wishes for coping with the trouble that has come with this accident.
Also, try to remember that you still have an intact body and an intact head to operate it with. Too many innocent victims of accidents don't have that consolation.
