MELBOURNE IN THE RUNNING TO BOOST ITS MAJOR EVENTS
Melbourne is set to make an audacious bid to host the Running of the Bulls through the city’s iconic laneways.
Tourism and Major Events Minister Tim Holding said there was every chance Melbourne could steal the event away from Pamplona which has held it since the late 13th century, when the current contract expires.
“For too long the people of Pamplona have monopolised this event, the Brumby Government is determined to grab the bull by the horns and snare this important event for Melbourne,” Mr Holding said.
“Melbourne has a year-round calendar of major events unrivalled around the world.
The Formula One Grand Prix, Australian Open tennis, the Spring Racing Carnival and Tiger Woods coming here later this year – the Running of the Bulls would be the icing on the cake.”
Mr Holding said Melbourne’s Running of the Bulls is expected to start in the historic theatre precinct at the Paris End of Collins Street, travel through Chinatown, across Swanston Street, through the quaint King Street district and end at a packed Etihad Stadium.
“Criticism of a lack of community in the new look Docklands precinct will well and truly be answered by an event such as this,” he said.
“We are also in preliminary discussions with musical producers to rename the smash hit musical Bully Elliot for the week of the event.
“Some naysayers like Ted Baillieu may scoff at this bid – but now is not the time to drop our bullish approach to major events.
“Sociable visitors to our noble city will be able to eat the edible food in our restaurants, buy collectibles from our shops and enjoy our drinkable wines.”
