A thread for metal heads: What's your poison?

Ferrous Oxide

I've met a fair few metal fans, and one thing they have in common is that they usually disagree on what kind of metal is actually good. Metal is probably one of the most diverse genre groupings, and I wanted to see what the metal heads of NSG liked.

Personally, I'm partial to folk, symphonic and power/epic metal, although I am gaining an appreciation for tech and prog.

I'm quite partial to a great variety of metal. I especially like the early stuff (pre-metal) as well as NWOBHM. Motorhead is a favourite of mine. From there it just kinda goes with how metal has evolved. Thrash bands like Exodus, Megadeth and Slayer rate high on my list. Of the more modern bands I think I only really listen to Children of Bodom with any interest. And 3 Inches of Blood as well. I guess it's not so much the genre's I enjoy, but actual bands, regardless of their style.

But seriously, Viking and folk metal is one of my favourites. It's what metal is all about for me, going to a small venue, or even a pub, not beating around the bush and just saying "fuck you we are vikings" and making as much noise as possible using medieval melodies (most metal uses those kind of harmonies anyway).

My favourite is post-pre-pre-post heavy doom thrash folk dark black gothic speed power hardcore metal.

Epic neo-progressive power dark folk metal, epic power war metal, symphonic death epic grindcore thrash metal and majestic funeral doom metal. I mean, these are some of the branches I've listened to recently (or not so) and care to name. I like majority of metal genres, and venture into the lands of rock quite casually.

a fair bit, but mostly thrash, grindcore and the like. i'm not sure what you'd class bands like Lamb of God and Pantera as. my all time favourite bands include those two, as well as Testament, Bolt Thrower, Exodus, Sepultura, Slipknot, Machine Head, Iced Earth, Demons & Wizards, Crowbar, In Flames, Napalm Death, Pitchshifter, etc. i like a lot more, obviously, but most of those have been favourites for a long time. i've been wanting to get a Testament tattoo for a long time, too

And I won't say Rammstein isn't metal but the only people I've come across that actually listen to them were the kids in German class way back in high school. :p

we all used to listen to Rammstein, and i still do occasionally. i like the mix of industrial and metal... makes for a very powerful sound. (same kind of way i like Pitchshifter's mix of drum n bass, thrash and punk)

Black. Black fucking metal.

I like a lot of old school heavy metal too, like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Dio, Mercyful Fate, and King Diamond. And a lot of proto-black metal, like Celtic Frost.

I like bands from all genres, but if I had to pick, its either heavy or black.

I've ticked a few boxes as well, Other was one of them. That category holds a lot of different subgenres, such as doom, industrial metal, post rock/metal (Pelican, Isis, Cult Of Luna, Neurosis etc.) and acts that just can't be properly described, such as Thought Industry and OLD.

And when all the metal legions fail, there's still grindcore. You can hardly go wrong with grindcore.

As I mentioned earlier, Im a huge black metal fan, but as far as the 'scene' goes, Im far more partial to the thrash and death metal scene. The comradery you find at shows there is awesome, random people buying you beers, stuff like that. You find that at some black metal shows, but not enough.

The main problem with the black metal scene is that it is infected/dominated by homophobes, racists, Nazis and other neo-fascist assholes. I tend to shy away from the musicians who are like that (I can seperate the music from the artist, problem is most NSBM - National Socialist Black Metal - is awful musically anyway), but the scene is still crawling with 'em. And then there are people like Natterfrost (Carpathian Forest), who while a great musician, is just...eck.

Favourite is easily doom metal - bands like Electric Wizard, Candlemass, St Vitus, early Sabbath, Solitude Aeturnus, Cathedral, etc.

Overclassification can get silly but I also like bands characterised as stoner metal, drone, post-metal, industrial metal and some black metal (although as already mentioned the scene is rife with racists...favourite here is probably Emperor) Also a fan of Bathory and I like some thrash. I'm open to most metal really...

Emperor and Bathory are also present in my music collection, which means that I've got it on cd. People who claim to be ardent music lovers but only have a computer with mp3's shouldn't expect any respect from me.

For people who want to know the ugly truth about black metal, I recommend reading Lords Of Chaos by Michael Moynihan and Didrik Søderlind. I got it for my birthday, it proved to be a compelling read.

Epic/power and symphonic are the types I really like. Of course, I listen to a bit of progressive/technical, more out of curiosity than anything else.

Blind Guardian remains as my only "favourite" metal band. Favourite in the sense that I would say I like most of their work, and that I listen to them consistently. The "Nightfall in Middle Earth" album is one of the few CDs I can listen from beginning to end without interrumptions.

Well, I don't think that's really fair. I personally prefer to have a physical copy of the music I enjoy. But thinking about that a little more, I have something on the order of 500 CDs...thats probably about $10,000 worth if I think of the price I paid when they were new. Now if I added the time I spent searching for each one of those albums, especially considering a lot of obscure metal is hard to track down and I need to travel quite a bit to get to some decent stores...

Now if i'd instead invested that time and money into playing and creating my own music, i'd be pretty fucking good, and I certainly think my right to consider myself a music lover would be secure, even if my bower-bird tendency to hoard shinies wouldn't be as prominent. So yeah, I can see why people just download it.

Nope. I have not been the victim of any gravitational anomalies. University broke up for the Easter holidays, so I'm back at home, using a computer with a failing hard drive and incredibly slow interweb connection. I'm having to wait over half an hour for it to start up and deal with it freezing for about a quarter of an hour at regular intervals; consequently I've been rationing computer usage for the sake of the last remains of my sanity.

Well, the world isn't really fair. Mind you, I'm pretty much into obscure underground releases too. What I tend to do is to buy cd's directly from bands when they perform live, while eBay enabled me to get my hands on quite a few interesting titles for very reasonable prices. Clearance sales have also been instrumental in expanding my collection. When you take the time to look around, you can buy more music for your money.

You've got a point there, but the concept of 'truth' is a slippery one. The human brain is not the most trustworthy recording device, and other evidence can often be interpreted in several ways. And let's not even start about the psychological conditions of those lads back in the nineties.

Haha, this is fair. To be honest, if anyone but Fenriz had pointed out that the book wasnt entirely accurate, Id have brushed it off (well, maybe Id have listened if it was Ishan or Abbath). But since it came from one of the guys in the Circle who was a relatively normal, functioning human being...:p

A relatively normal, functioning human being, eh? That pretty much describes me. Mind you, I'm of the opinion that Fenriz is a relaxed individual with a healthy sense of humor these days, but back in the early nineties he and his comrades might have been a bit less stable (which is not too uncommon for people in their teenage years and their early twenties, of course).

Lol @ Converge being trendy.

Lamb of God is metal for MTV kids, there's lots of similarly bad/trendy metalcore floating around right now. Not all bad metal is metalcore, and not all metalcore is trendy shit.

TOOL isnt metal. And there is no such thing as "alternative metal".

One thing that you always have to keep in mind with discussions such as these is that it's usually not worth the effort responding to such statements. Saying that certain kinds of metal aren't true or some other subjective value is an opinion and nothing more.

That being said, it's now time for me to shock the more orthodox fans of the various metal genres by confessing that I have a soft spot for techno/industrial remixes of death & black metal songs.

Spinal Tap.

Tap rock.

I mean, how much more black could they be? And the answer is: none. None more black.

That's a nice list of bands you got there. I saw Týr perform live in the Dutch town of Hellendoorn last weekend, together with Adorned Brood, Heidevolk and Alestorm. Not only are they agreeable lads, they also play good music! Their new album is going to feature several tracks that are real catchy.

Blind Guardian remains as my only "favourite" metal band. Favourite in the sense that I would say I like most of their work, and that I listen to them consistently. The "Nightfall in Middle Earth" album is one of the few CDs I can listen from beginning to end without interrumptions.

:fluffle:

That's easily one of my favorite albums of all time, of course, it helps that I'm a Tolkien nut. :)

...I have to mention Dethklok, only because I'm watching the first two seasons of Metalocalypse. Amusingly awesome.

If you like Dethklok, you might also want to check out Zimmer's Hole. Gene Hoglan plays the drums in that band as well, together with the guys from Strapping Young Lad (minus Devin Townsend, that is).
