Vermicompost

For the first time in a few years I'm living in a space with no yard, and so I've had to rethink my compost situation. A backyard bin is no longer feasible; I'm taking it indoors, and trying my hand at vermicomposting (http://www.writeseniors.com/compostworld/how.shtml). My bin is built, I've got some food scraps waiting (read: rotting) in my fridge, and I'm getting my worms tomorrow.
So, NSG, anyone have any experience with vermicompost? Management tips? Horror stories? Any idea what I should do with the excess compost? I mean, I've got some potted plants and plan to get a balcony garden going...but I can't see needing this much soil.

What? Worms in the house and rotting food. What could go wrong?

My unhelpful advice: Find a neighbor or friend who does proper outdoor composting. Donate to their cause.

What use could you possibly have for compost if you no longer have a gardening space?

Indeed. Great pranks must be in the works if a worm husbandry program is necessary.

If you have excess compost, give to friends with plants, freecycle it, make friends with a vendor at a farmers market and exchange it for fresh food?
You'll also need to find a home for worms once they start reproducing...do you have friends that go fishing?

Perhaps you could rent an allotment space?

I'm diverting waste, mostly. Whenever I've had a good compost going my garbage output has gone down to roughly a bag a month. And I do plan to garden, just not on the scale that I could have with a yard.

Community gardening in Ottawa is in a sorry state, unfortunately. Everyone's on a waiting list. I briefly looked into trying to get one started in my neighbourhood, but there are some nasty soil contamination issues here.
