I smoke Schimmelpinnicks when I have the money. They're cigars, not cigarettes, but they're cigarette size, so I can have a cigar with the cigarette smokers and not be left standing on my own for the remaining 44 minutes while I finish it.

You generally have to go to a dedicated cigar store to find them. When I was living in the mountains I was able to convince the liquor store that had a humidor to carry them. I don't know how big the cigar thing got elsewhere, but here (Northern California) it was big enough that about half the liquor stores have a humidor and you can at least get a dried out Macanudo at 7-11.

Or you can buy them in bulk online if you have the up front cash and a humidor of your own. I haven't done that myself yet, I kind of use the hassle of availability to mitigate my usage.

The only time I've run into someone who even knew what they were, though, it was dutch guy. So clearly there is somewhere near you to get some if you're running into people smoking them all the time.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cigars#Health_effects

The increased risk for those smoking 1–2 cigars per day is too small to be statistically significant, and the health risks of the 3/4 of cigar smokers who smoke less than daily are not known and are hard to measure; although it has been claimed that people who smoke few cigars have no increased risk, a more accurate statement is that their risks are proportionate to their exposure.

and of course it lists the laundry list of other health effects...Im waitin on my Electronic Cigars...

I smoked years ago, for about two years. I wasn't really a 'smoker' then either. I just smoked when I drank...though that ended up to be very often. My dad and my brothers are the same way. My dad won't smoke at all when he's home, but he'll smoke when he's up North working. My brothers smoke when they feel like it, then not when they don't, for months at a time sometimes.

I'm sort of like that with a lot of things. I consume a lot of something (spring rolls, alcohol, cheesy reggaeton music) over and over for a period of time, get sick of it and then don't touch it for an extended period.

I tend to crave cigs when I get really pissed off or stressed. It's less of a physical craving, and more of a psychological expression of said ire/stress.

Yeah, what they're addicted to indeed, (shouldn't have gotten me started man, lol)
I deeply regret it.

Its mostly sex, alcohol, tobacco, and food...mainly sex, lol
I know, I bet your all just a bunch of sex-crazed teenagers really, aren't you.

I'm sort of like that with a lot of things. I consume a lot of something (spring rolls, alcohol, cheesy reggaeton music) over and over for a period of time, get sick of it and then don't touch it for an extended period.
I'm the same. Sometimes I'll get a really random craving and I'll have to have it.
I tend to crave cigs when I get really pissed off or stressed. It's less of a physical craving, and more of a psychological expression of said ire/stress.
I need a fag more when I'm stressed, but I still smoke all the time anyway.
Way to kill my buzz.

I said, 'cheap', but it was a comparison. A regular pack of cigs here costs about $13. That's generally what I pay...unless I get cigs through the rez and then I'm paying about $7. Jerkface.
How much is $7 in £? And are you talking about packs of 20?

It's flavored tobacco. You smoke the pipe so that the smoke is cooled as it is drawn through water. I like the different flavors better than plain tobacco and I look the cool smoke.

However, I've switched more to cigars, both for cost reasons (in per unit or qualitative cost) and because I enjoy appreciating the taste and flavor of well-prepared tobacco more than simply using it for a nicotine kick. Just remember that more doctors smoke Camels than any other cigarette...

Personally, what I'd like to see are more smoking lounges. I don't care if people ask me to smoke outside or elsewhere...that's just politeness, but I want a good, solid bar where I can knock back a few drinks and share camaraderie with other smokers without having to worry about being a pain in the ass to someone else (provided they were there first) or getting fined by the nanny state for my decision to smoke. The market is definitely there for such places, so I see no reason why they shouldn't exist. I fully believe that it is up to private businesses and individuals to make that decision, although I do respect concerns about nonsmoking employees being unable to avoid secondhand smoke when working...that's why, again, I want to see free permits to allow businesses to allow smoking so long as they meet reasonable criteria for air quality (in the even that they're employing nonsmokers).

Give us places to enjoy tobacco, owned and operated by smokers (or nonsmokers who have no problem with it) and we'd leave everyone alone. It's that simple. If they gave us that, I would have no problem with smoking bans elsewhere, even in other bars and restaurants. However, too many assholes think it's their duty to stamp out an activity that has existed for thousands of years in the name of the Cult of Healthy Living (whose reward is a living death under the pall of dementia...) and so try to ban it altogether rather than accepting a real-world solution that lets everyone enjoy what they want to do without interference.

Cause you're harming other people as well.

If a smoker wants to run a business that permits smoking and hires smokers, it's no concern of ours (non-smokers) whatsoever unless the smokers wish to hold us liable for their medical expenses through a form of taxpayer-funded universal health care.

Libertarian solution: Business owners can do what they want, customers can go there or not as they see fit, and no one else is expected to pay for their possible ailments.

I don't like secondhand smoke, but I can tolerate the occasional scent as I walk down the street. My only objection to public smoking was when the tobacco addicts would clog every single doorway at college with their dense clouds of smoke as they hurriedly got their hourly fix. I approve of the laws setting minimum distances between smokers and public building entrances. I only wish the college had set the policy instead of waiting for a law to be passed at the state level.

I once smoked 40 Marlboro Reds per day. I've slowly been cutting down, I'm currently on 10 Lights per day.

No, most people I know who smoke, smoke Lights, in one form or another. I think that might be an American thing - for one, Marlboro Lights don't have those funny white filters over here.

I smoke because I'm addicted, not for any pretentions of it being cool. I don't care about anyone else's opinion.

Euh... people who smoke are so disgusting. Their grey skin, and the stench of them!
Seriously, how can anyone have so little self-discipline?

Cause you're harming other people as well.
No I'm not. And I wouldn't be if they made smoking areas.
If a smoker wants to run a business that permits smoking and hires smokers, it's no concern of ours (non-smokers) whatsoever unless the smokers wish to hold us liable for their medical expenses through a form of taxpayer-funded universal health care.

In the UK, apparently the tax on cigarettes equals the amout the NHS gets off the government. So my freind says that it is patriotic to smoke.

It ha nothing to do with self-disipline. Some people (like me) just enjoy smoking. It's sociable.

Not really. Lots of people are driven away by smoke.

I have yet to meet these people.

Actually, I take that back. I have met some who wont associate with smokers. Theyre just usually people I wouldnt want to associate with anyway.

I know, but some people can't stand to be around smokers, and I can't say I'll go out of my way to be with them.

I know, but some people can't stand to be around smokers, and I can't say I'll go out of my way to be with them.

Well, it is a free choice to associate with whomever you want. I personally feel that it should be irrelevant; I'll respect others' wishes not to smoke around them, but I also don't expect to be judged or treated differently because I do so. It's my choice, and I'm more than willing to accommodate others' wishes when possible; I wouldn't want to be forced to breath in automobile exhaust or paint fumes all the time, so I see no reason why it should be any different with tobacco. There are rude people on both sides, so it's hardly a one-sided issue...there's no real difference between a smoker that disrespects nonsmokers and a nonsmoker that disrespects smokers, even if the former attempts to justify it in terms of "freedom" and the latter in the terms of "healthy living".

It's the same philosophy behind my opinion on smoking bans. If a business wants to permit smoking, it should be allowed to do so but only if it makes it clear and unequivocal to its customers and (especially) employees that this is the policy. A person shouldn't be able to simply go in and light up without approval, nor should they be allowed to go in and demand that people stop smoking just because they don't like it. In places that the public has little or no choice but to use, governments should be free to regulate the extent to which smoking is permitted. And, of course, bars, restaurants or other entertainment venues are definitely not an essential service.

Long story short, everyone should try to respect the freedom of others as much as possible, be it freedom to smoke or freedom to not smoke and/or not be exposed to smoke.
