(1)The word "bikie" makes them sound so cute

(2)"They came running through picking up the big metal barrier poles and swinging them like swords at each other,"

Other people might say they were swinging them "like one might swing a big metal pole"

(3)The others escaped, some of them by hailing taxis

What? Are taxi drivers really that desperate for fares?

Yes, one thing you'd never see in US is bikers fighting. Please.

Well, that depends. Were the bikies just whacking each other with the poles, or were they holding them at one end while striking lots of silly poses and grunting at each other?

You've got to respect them for choosing an interesting setting for their big fight scene, though. Most thugs have no sense of cinema, and they just fight in any old street, bar or apartment.

There was a reason why Mad Max was set in Australia.

Not in the airports. Fights in themselves are not a big deal, but mass fights in the airports are pretty news making.

Someone remembered me!!! I'm famous!!! xoxo

OT: There has been a lot of investigation into airport security since the culprits were able to leave before the airport was locked down. I highly doubt that they were brandishing the poles they took from the Qantas departure lounge when they hopped into the cabs. How were the drivers supposed to know who they were or what happened inside?

The government is now looking at introducing laws to jail members of these gangs. Because that's really going to solve the problem.

The sort of laws which are being proposed to combat the bikie problem seem somewhat reactionary and draconian. I mean, ok, I personally don't know much about bikie gangs, but banning membership seems to be going way too far, and is a significant attack on civil liberties.

You know, they wouldn't be so mean if you wouldn't call 'em 'bikies'...they're just acting out because of the silly name you gave them.

It's been re-done in many, many movies, so even us whipper-snappers can appreciate the idea. I, for one, support it.

and brandishing metal poles "like swords"

If they come on NS, they're banned for their history of posting violence.

Seriously, though, I don't see the need for group-specific laws when Australia's already got laws against criminal violence, assault, and so on.

Of course, I'm not a State Premier coming up to an election next year with the polls suggesting an "Anyone But Me" win.

(Given that he's facing an "Oh God, Not Them" Opposition, though, maybe Laura Norder's his shipoopi.)

SO whats the solution at the airport? I think Aussie law should be amended to allow visiting Americans with concealed carry permits to continue to carry. Once we got our bags and such the airport should be safe. Maybe make it a treaty so those Aussies cant change the law on us.
