They spend money on this?

So last night I was listening to Coast to Coast AM, and they were talking about UFOs and The Presidents (USA). Apparently one of the guy, his entire job was to do research, he was an Academic Researcher. I think somewhere in the program, he mentioned that he has gotten grant money for his research, and honestly that surprised me. I mean yes, year after year we hear about groups of people coming out with news that they've researched the obvious, but I always thought that people who research UFOs or the Paranormal relied on book sales, and speaking engagement for their income.

Are grant money really that easy to get? If so, then what the Hell am I doing?

Alex Jones is paid by the NWO to be a disinfo agent, obviously, so others like him probably do the same.

I think it's important to look for extraterrestrial life. It makes us look good.

Imagine if aliens pop down for a visit and go:

Aliens: "Here we are!"
Us: "Who the hell are you?"
Aliens: "We're from another planet! We've come to meet you."
Us: "There are other planets?"
Aliens: "Of course there are other planets! Did you honestly think you were alone in the universe?"
Us: "Actually, yes. We're pretty awesome."
Aliens: "You're okay. Your tacos are awesome, but your rednecks are freaks and keep insisting we probe them."
Us: "Yeah, that's a Republican thing. Listen, enjoy your visit, but if you take the construction and agricultural jobs away from the Mexicans, they'll fucking kill you." *walks away to look for a hooker*
Aliens: "Assholes." *destroys planet*

Getting grants is a literary art form. Everything depends on how the grant application is written. He kung-fu is probably very good when it comes to describing his projects in such a way that they seem to be relevant to something.

His success is probably bolstered by choosing which grants to apply for very carefully. I'd bet half or more of all the money he has ever gotten has come from the kinds of grants (sometimes called "fellowship" grants or similar meaningless names) that are just small amounts of money (less than $2000) for researchers to use for general support. You know...ramen money. You just need to be working on something to qualify for those. You don't actually have to be working on anything worthwhile necessarily. They are meant to support the practice of whatever it is -- research, art, letters, whatnot.

EDIT: Also, Wil doesn't tell us how much grant money he has gotten. He might have gotten two grants of $500 each, and be dining out on a reputation of having gotten grants for his work ever since.

EDIT2: So I took a super-quick look at Wil's links (which are hilarious, btw :D), and yep, I'm betting on two $500 grants for two completely different things, and the rest is the guy BSing us.

Personally, I can't wait to make an intergalactic faux-pas with the traditional British greeting of the handshake and "how do you do?", which will turn out to be a sign of their (read : our) impending destruction by my (read : their) hands.

Did he say it was a government grant, or was it from a private organization? Their are large organizations that do paranormal research.

Also, what was this guy's take on UFOs? Was he arguing that at least some of them were actually alien spacecraft and that the government was hiding it? I'd be somewhat surprised perhaps if he got a government grant for that.

Are grant money really that easy to get? If so, then what the Hell am I doing?

I'm surprised, because I thought that support for scientific research got cut a lot under Bush. Unless its not government money. Or maybe he got it while Clinton was President or something.;)

However, depending on what sort of research this guy was doing, I don't see anything wrong with giving him the grant. Whatever the various explanations for UFOs are, its such a widespread phenomenon that I think it deserves research money.

Weaponized ghosts, duh. Or ghost interrogation techniques.
Is it possible to waterboard a ghost? Let's find out! But first we need to find a ghost, and before that you need to give me $500,000. All deposits may be made in the form of unmarked, unsorted bills of denominations between fives and twenties, stuffed in an tan brief case and placed behind the large oak tree by the North Gate of Riverside Park at 3 PM Saturday afternoon.

many advances in radar tecnology are the resault of trying to create a ufo detection and defense. i hope it isn't still too classified to mention this, and i'm talking about this was more then 40 years ago, ever hear of the an-fps85? it was the begining, or near the begining, of phased array tecnology, and while i doubt anyone will ever directly admit it, at least part of the motivation behind it, (as i read between the lines of the classified issue of, i forget, either ieee spectrum, or aviation leak and space tecnology, which i saw at the time when i was in the air force and cleared to) was the ability, or at least potential, to detect, by various comparative algorythmic means, cloaked/stealthed airborn and spaceborn vessles, including those of extraterrestrial origen.

Grant money doesn't necessarily come from the government - in fact I can tell you (currently in the process of looking for some funding) most of it comes from private special-interest groups or charities. Government funding tends to have a lot of strings attached and are either very big for very specific projects or really small (ramen money as Muryvets said).

That said, getting grant money is also a wondrous mystical art that very few have discovered the process for and most of those are probably sleeping with a (or many) members of the grant committee.
