So, I had to fire somebody today

Well, okay, to be technical I didn't fire him, rather I confirmed his firing from last year when he came back to re-apply recently, but I just felt like such an ass.

Now don't get me wrong, this guy (Nice though he was) deserved to not be hired back. Though I will avoid all specifics that could even remotely indicate where, exactly, it is that I work (Would I call myself paranoid? Not really. I prefer "aggressively defensive"), a relatively appropriate analogy would be that he was hired as a chef at a restaurant and then, with each order, was in turn ordering the food from another restaurant. Of course that's not a perfect analogy, but I think you get the idea of why I couldn't hire him back after last year.

Now in a way this re-firing was his own fault, when you're fired for cause and nothing's changed why would you expect to be hired again, but I still felt like a total tool telling him it wasn't going to happen. I managed to pass the buck rather well (I wish I had better news, I spoke to my supervisor, it's company policy, etc.) but I was still the face of the non-hiring. Additionally, up until this year I had the same job as he was looking into (I only recently became what was once my boss), so I'm still struggling to break out of the comrades-in-arms mentality of people fighting "the man" (Okay, I was actually one of "the man-s" even when I had that same job, but there's still that "workin' buddies" feeling).

I'm sure the experience was actually a lot worse for him than it was for me, I know we all hate the guy who talks about how hard it is on him when somebody is beaten up/dumped/fired/etc., but it still wasn't fun, and is definitely one of the downsides of management. On the other hand, the money and power are definitely some of the upsides, so...I guess it all balances out in the end.

Come on, that took three minutes! There was a time it wouldn't have even been two minutes and we'd have already gotten three or four anti-blogs!

That's no excuse, when you have an obligation you need to make sure you meet it. WHat kind of example are you setting for the young ones?

I hope they don't follow my example. It could be disastrous for society at large.

the trick is to tell yourself you didn't fire him. Just he fired himself.
Basically what I do with the homeless people when I throw rocks at them.

Someday, I'm going to figure out why God decided to only give the power of telekinesis to people with multiple personalities who would only use their abilities to propel bottles and stones in their own direction.
I guess it has something to do with how only schizophrenics can become telepathic.

I think somebody might've been lost here, and I'm relatively sure it's me.

Clearly you need to be deposed of in a gloriously bloody Communist revolution.

Or you could get me blogging again. Oh wait, I never stopped.

I'm sorry you felt guilty for firing him. Question, doesn't he feel in the least bit bad about not doing his job correctly? I've never understood why someone should feel guilty about doing the right thing and why someone who was slacking off should feel justified in doing it.

Eh, I figured out a way around that. If you tack a question at the end of it, it's not a blog, it's an invite for discussion! :D
