Congress (http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D9759GG00&show_article=1&catnum=0)is getting deep into NCAA football, now. I guess we can expect sweeping changes in the way a national champion team is selected, since Obama favors a playoff.

Everyone from President Barack Obama on down to fans has criticized how college football determines its top team. Now senators are getting off the sidelines to examine antitrust issues involving the Bowl Champion Series.

The current system "leaves nearly half of all the teams in college football at a competitive disadvantage when it comes to qualifying for the millions of dollars paid out every year," the Senate Judiciary's subcommittee on antitrust, competition policy and consumer rights said in a statement Wednesday announcing the hearings.

...

In the House, Rep. Joe Barton of Texas, the top Republican on the Energy and Commerce Committee, has sponsored legislation that would prevent the NCAA from calling a football game a "national championship" unless the game culminates from a playoff system.

It's almost as if there were nothing else to keep Congress busy. Have thoughts of bread and circuses occurred to anyone else?

America sure has it's priorities right; "football" and gay marriage, those are the issues at hand.

But if the US govt. has to talk about football, why not just throw in the towel with armourball and switch to rugby?

Aren't colleges PRIVATE institutions, though? It's like going up to Ford and saying "Now you make candy! Washington says so!".

The majority ones affected by this receive federal funding.
And they most certainly receive government accreditation.

However, that being said WTF does congress care how a group of people run their amateur football games?

Where was your complaining when the Republican congresses looked into steroids use in baseball?

Just admit it, youre an intellectually dishonest troll.

EDIT: Im actually suprised youre complaining, considering its a Republican that is leading the charge.

Texas is just pissed because they think they got hosed out of the NCG. A few years ago it was Georgia, and next year it will be (insert team here). And now a politician from said state will thump his chest to show his constituents that he cares about issues that affect them. Nothing shocking or surprising there.

Having said all of that, there really should be a Playoff.

Something to do with that being an illegal drug, and a organization covering up the manufacture, sale, and use of it.

As opposed to the current issue where congress is mad because his state's school didn't get scored fairly.

Yeah it is a crappy system. UT beat both teams that ended up playing in championship.

That's what I thought too; if steroid culture is widespread enough within the league or sport, it might as well be one big drugs ring. And that's when the govt. is right to step in.

Shouldn't colleges actually be about education rather than sport?

Yeah, but sports bring in a gigantic amount of money for universities with good programs. For example, Ohio State earns hundreds of millions of dollars in profits from its athletic programs, and that money in turn ends up being invested in university-wide programs. Plus, athletics are a big draw for attracting new students (interested in sports, of course) that might have the choice between several different good universities.

Most importantly, it gives you another thing to be proud of as well as, in my case, the best excuse for doing nothing, drinking and barbecuing ever.
