Merengue is easier and actually more enjoyable...It's like the "light" version of latin dance. Salsa people always get SOOO serious.

Por eso. It's the competitive quality of salsa that annoys me, but I also just don't enjoy the music as much. Too piquante, in the Chilean meaning of the term...cheesy. Over the top. What I like about merengue is that you can either do it very fast, or if you're tired, you can do more of a cumbia to it because the rhythms are so similar. I'm definitely old school though, I love Sonora Palacios, Sonora Malecon, Juan Luis Guerra y los 440, Los Hermanos Rosarios etc. Not a crazy amount of new stuff that grabs me, but then again, everyone redos those songs so I get to hear them all the time. Fuck I love merengue...of all the ways I like to dance, this is the one I'd pick if I were stuck with only one style forever more.

I'm not so into the technical aspect of dance, I like to let my hips guide me, or have a partner who leads well...intricate steps and shit, not really my cup of tea.

So I've found...learning to to move properly, and follow properly has done me more than well. I also like the fact that the way I dance to non latin music has been greatly flavoured by merengue/cumbia/etc. I get a lot of compliments, when people stop staring at my ass :D

Some of the music you find in Latin America is, to my chagrin, more noise than music. Search for Regaettón and dispair.:(

Ah, pero claro. El sayo no le cae únicamente a la músic latinoamericana. Enka me pone los pelos de punta y a mi me gusta la música tradicional japones. Claro, que lo que viene de México pone en duda esta aseveración, pero... a mi encantan otros estilos de música. No hay nada más lindo que el ballenato y el tango, joder, es tan sensual. :)
