Baby Bitch (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vb15XAgGPnI) by Ween puts an angry lump in my throat.

People say, how beautiful, how sweet, how kind.
You're perfect, you've got nothing to hide.
But I, for one, have seen the sun
And the bitch that you've locked up inside.

Got fat, got angry, started hating myself.
Wrote birthday boy for you babe.
Now I'm skinny and sick and paranoid
Without a cent to my name.

Baby, baby, baby bitch.
Fuck you, you stinkin' ass ho
Most beauty I've seen
You come from a dream.
But I cant close my eyes anymore.
No, I cant close my eyes anymore.

I am a tad affected by some of Beethoven's works. Popular modern music does not "touch" me; all the lyrics are of a poetry which uses metaphors I do not understand (except for rap, which I can easily comprehend, but not enjoy), and the voices have been so artificially altered I feel like I am listening to a robot.

I think that the mental association with Grave has a lot to do with the song's effect. I love Angela's vocals, but her screaming doesn't really lend itself to sadness.

I have heard that song before. I watched the movie (Grave of the fireflies, Hotaru no Haka)like a month ago with a lot of japanese people and was devastated. I even cried in public after it finished. So devastated that I watched it again yesterday. (I'm not an emotional masochist, but if a movie reach my feelings, deserves a second session). Such a coincidence I get to read about it the next day.

I do not reach that point of disdain, but I am also more affected by some classical music than to modern. Yet I refer to classical (or "academic" music, I think the "classical" label is a common mistake in english) as "works", not as "songs". For me the word "song" is more applied to popular than to academic music.

My personal list includes Elgar, particularly "Nimrod" from Enigma variations, and the Cello concerto, (my favourites are the version by Jacqueline Du Pré and by myself, meaning that I usually play it when I am extremely depressed), also the second movement of the 7th symphony by Beethoven. I am not so affected by the 5th symphony as most people are. The first movement of the Mendelssohn's 3rd symphony, the first movement of "Winter" by Vivaldi, most arias from Tosca and several chants from the Mozart's "Requiem". "Pavane pour une infante défunte" of Ravel. 6th and Manfred symphonies from Tchaikovsky.

I do not reach that point of disdain,

I do not necessarily disdain popular music (expect for the redundant songs which try to convince the listener of the virtues of drugs and murder), I just was not raised on it. I can tell many of the songs have complex and poetic lyrics, but they are lyrics I cannot understand. The voice alterations--echos and warps--disorient me.

but I am also more affected by some classical music than to modern. Yet I refer to classical (or "academic" music, I think the "classical" label is a common mistake in english) as "works", not as "songs". For me the word "song" is more applied to popular than to academic music.

Right. I call it "art music".

"Pavane pour une infante défunte" of Ravel. 6th and Manfred symphonies from Tchaikovsky.

Those are fine choices; in fact, the Allegretto of Beethoven's 7th was just what I was thinking of when I posted the composer's name--though I generally listen to his pieces in full (of course, I, unlike yourself, am never the one playing them), that movement is something I will listen to by itself for "mood" purposes.

I love 3 Libras, and it was the first tune i learned from them (oddly i was the only local guy who could sing Maynard and play that simultaneously) - and i do love the tune, but the rawness and intent of Rose strikes me in a stronger and deeper way than 3 Libras did. Not by much, but they're really, really different tunes and meanings. Of course, what a person says when they perform isn't always what a listener hears, so there's only certain occasion pf performance for Rose while more for 3 Libras. :)

Also Lacrymosa composed by Dmitri Yanov-Yanovsky and performed by The Kronos Quartet with Dawn Upshaw. I couldn't find a sample longer than a few seconds, so you'll have to take my word for it.

Hymn to the Sea (http://www.last.fm/music/James+Horner/_/Hymn+to+the+Sea) - James Horner / Titanic

It devastated me once or twice, and that was it.

Somewhere Over The Rainbow - Israel Kamakawiwo'ole.

At first I couldn't remember who made that song, so I made what I could remember using a midi sythesizer. What I made in the synthesizer devastated me. I cried for a whole hour.

Ah. Ice.
The ice is thin come on dive in
underneath my lucid skin
the cold is lost, forgotten
Hours pass days pass time stands still
light gets dark and darkness fills
my secret heart forbidden...
I think you worried for me then
the subtle ways that I'd give in but I know
you liked the show
tied down to this bed of shame
you tried to move around the pain but oh
your soul is anchored

The only comfort is the moving of the river
You enter into me, a lie upon your lips
offer what you can, I'll take all that I can get
only a fool's here...

I don't like your tragic sighs
as if your god has passed you by well hey fool
that's your deception
your angels speak with jilted tongues
the serpent's tale has come undone you have no
strength to squander

The only comfort is the moving of the river
You enter into me, a lie upon your lips
offer what you can, I'll take all that I can get
only a fool's here to stay
only a fool's here to stay
only a fool's here...
Listen to it.

I hadn't heard that until a minute ago when I looked it up. Interesting, but not the same song, rather they both take their name from the same place--as part of the requiem mass (means weeping, I believe, something like that). Yanov-Yanovsky's composition takes the text from the requiem mass entirely. The vocalist has an almost unanchored melody against the quartet's measured figures. At least that's what I can remember from the liner notes...anyway, pretty haunting...

Straughn: It's Full of Grace on my CD, although I'm prepared to believe it may go by multiple names. The one that really rips me up, however - to the point that I can't listen to it when I'm feeling even slightly glum because it will make me totally depressed and weepy ... actually, heck, I can't listen to it ever - is Angel. Which is apparently about Hollywood celebrity drug overdoses, but still.

Every time we lie awake
After every hit we take
Every feeling that I get
But I haven’t missed you yet

Every roommate kept awake
By every sigh and scream we make
All the feelings that I get
But I still don’t miss you yet

Only when I stop to think about it

I hate everything about you
Why do I love you
I hate everything about you
Why do I love you

Every time we lie awake
After every hit we take
Every feeling that I get
But I haven’t missed you yet

Only when I stop to think about it

I hate everything about you
Why do I love you
I hate everything about you
Why do I love you

Only when I stop to think
About you, I know
Only when you stop to think
About me, do you know

I hate everything about you

Well, I may as well get over this and admit to be totally devastated by a song in an anime, which I've been considering mentioning since my first post in this thread, but from which I have shied away for some reason or another.

The song is entitled "Komm, süsser Tod", is sung by a performer named Arianne, and appeared in The End of Evangelion.

Christ I'm pathetic, aren't I.

No, you are not pathetic, that song made me cry so many times, and for sure it will make me cry today again as soon as I remember about it and hear it again.

I hate you. You made me look pathetic.

I can think of two. Damn.

Everybody Hurts - R.E.M.

When the day is long and the night, the night is yours alone,
When you're sure you've had enough of this life, well hang on
Don't let yourself go, 'cause everybody cries and everybody hurts sometimes

Sometimes everything is wrong. Now it's time to sing along
When your day is night alone, (hold on, hold on)
If you feel like letting go, (hold on)
When you think you've had too much of this life, well hang on

'Cause everybody hurts. Take comfort in your friends
Everybody hurts. Don't throw your hand. Oh, no. Don't throw your hand
If you feel like you're alone, no, no, no, you are not alone

If you're on your own in this life, the days and nights are long,
When you think you've had too much of this life to hang on

Well, everybody hurts sometimes,
Everybody cries. And everybody hurts sometimes
And everybody hurts sometimes. So, hold on, hold on
Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on
Everybody hurts. You are not alone

Mad World - Tears for Fear

All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places, worn out faces
Bright and early for their daily races
Going nowhere, going nowhere
And their tears are filling up their glasses
No expression, no expression
Hide my head I want to drown my sorrow
No tomorrow, no tomorrow
And I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I'm dying
Are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you
'Cos I find it hard to take
When people run in circles
It's a very, very
Mad World
Children waiting for the day they feel good
Happy Birthday, Happy Birthday
Made to feel the way that every child should
Sit and listen, sit and listen
Went to school and I was very nervous
No one knew me, no one knew me
Hello teacher tell me what's my lesson
Look right through me, look right through me

Gotcha. She tore me apart with Ice, so i of course obsessed a while and got the imports and bootlegs i could get a hold of - including one of the first times (if not the) she played it live, as "Fall From Grace". I listened to that the first time on an unplanned 156 mile walk-turned-bike ride, along here:

Translation:
In the empty cities you return
Images go through you
Faint as you are to worship
Those who raid you

Like a demon to carry
The winters of the world
In her eyes to chase after
Old small principles

My loneliness is everything
My loneliness is nothing
Do not leave me now
When everything is harder

My love is everything
My love is nothing
Do not leave me now
For everything is harder

Tiny in the nights you dress
You will delude someone
And the harm that came yesterday
You run to overhaul it

The streets look like fire
The evenings of death
Love that has the smell of
Arena in its touch (death's)
