Diplomacy (Game)

I think this has come up before but not recently.

I've just started getting into it and it's on the way to addiction status. I figure a game based on manipulating your way to greater domination would be popular to NSG's denizens (or are you all too anti-social?)

Any other players around, share strategies, brag about wins etc etc.

Set up games if you like, www.playdiplomacy.com is my preferred site, be interesting to go head to head with some nsg-ers.

I might be interested, but I don't have time to have a good look just now...I'll be sure to check it out later tonight.

There's a 2005 version of the classic Diplomacy board game that was on retail which I baught over 2 years ago now.

I don't think I could play it online though; quite an uncompetitive anti-social as you say.

Here's what the one I have looks like at any rate: http://pcmedia.gamespy.com/pc/image/article/665/665958/diplomacy-20051110023133880.jpg

Yes. Sorry.

I'm kinda done with web games. I wouldn't even play NS today if someone sent me a link.

I've considered starting to play Diplomacy, but I never get around to it. I wish I knew more local people that'd want to play, because I imagine that it's probably much better with face-to-face dealings. Makes the winning backstab that much sweeter. :D

I've played by email before, that's mildly amusing.

Anyway, a fun game, but takes aeons to play out.

Edit: I prefer Settlers of Catan and Illuminati, really. SoC for board games based on pieces, and Illuminati for devious scheming and world domination.

Effectively, players take the roles of European powers at the beginning of the First World War, and try to gain dominance over their rivals. Notable features of the gameplay include all units having exactly the same value, no use of dice, and secret and simultaneous movement. It's a rather interesting game, really.

I own a copy and have played it since high school. My friends at the time and I even had "signature" move orders, like the Yorkshire Pudding, Putting the Squeeze on Brest, White Rushin', and the Wine and Dine Brine Line.

I own it and I play it regularly, Nana-san; it is simply Diplomacy with plenty of optional rules and an Italian map. Very fun.

I bought a pc version two years ago but the Ai is a little weak (and not treacherous enough) I might take a look at playing over the internet.

Why is it that I get the feeling you (without meaning offense) are a walking anachronism... You belonged in the Venetian senate back in the 1400s not on an online forum in 2009.:D

It's not the sort of game which can be effectively played by an AI yet - too much treachery and reasoning involved. I recommend PBEM or face-to-face (if you have ages).

Parkus, what did you think of Machiavelli in comparison to the normal game? I've considered playing, but never gave it a go.

That would be awesome! The clothing, the intrigue, the affairs, the art, the assassinations, the dueling, the literature.

I've played a few times. Sadly, I'm the only one in my family who enjoys strategy games so I never have anyone to play with.

The best game I ever had was in my European History class. Due to our class being small, everyone got a country, and I played Italy. In the rounds before Italy chose a side, the person playing Austria-Hungary had begun moving there armies near me, and it was obvious the people playing the Central Powers expected me to go Allies. They were so pissed when I joined them, though it did leave Austria-Hungary free to kill Russia while I held off France XD.

So, as I said, I've never really played, but it seems that several people here would at least be interested in that sort of game. Would anybody else be interested in trying to get a game together at some point? If we could get a full game, I bet it'd be fun.

DP is only fun when you have a group of committed people that won't dick around and take 3-4 weeks to complete a movement order.

Well if any are interested I've started a game on www.playdiplomacy.com (http://www.playdiplomacy.com/referrer.php?ref_id=12668) need to register but it's standard stuff. (full disclosure: That is my referral link, I get freebies for signing you lot up).

Game name is NSG, password is general

Any real beginners I'd advise to look here (http://www.playdiplomacy.com/help.php) for an intro. Actually I'd advise everyone to go there since apart from basic rules it has a lot of good tips under the New Player Guide page that even experienced players often forget.

I've let people set country preferences, as a rough guide

Easier

France, Turkey
England, Russia
Germany
Italy, Austria

Harder.

People may wish to disagree with this assessment but it's in the right sort of area.

Order phases process every 2 days, build and retreat phases every 24 hours. Will start a new game if people want to change these settings at all.

Have at you!

Nah. If you were around in the 1400s, you'd just wander around wishing it was the 9th Century so you could pal around with Alfred the Great.

And give-up the precious art and vernacular poetry? no sir! Besides, who can compare broad-swords to rapiers?

Who could compare either to the FN P90? More importantly, who could compare the chamber pot to the flush toilet?

For all its numerous flaws, the 15th century was notably light on plagues. The Black Death was over, and the (literal) shit storm that was coming with European urbanization wouldn't reach a head until the end of the 16th century.

He probably read about the 14th century and assumed that the 1400's would not be much different. A lot can happen in a hundred years, and in this case, it is called the Renaissance.

Still, before we assume, perhaps we need to get our facts straight, Parky. The 14th. century is, and I'm sure every sensible human being in the planet knows this, the period of the 1300s. The 15th. century is what I refer to the 1400s.

Even some so-called "historians" often make that mistake. :(

Anyway, where would you live? Venice, I suppose? Though late in the century, Florence and Rome would look attractive as well, what with the crime diminishing.

Period instruments.

Right there with you; I was hearing Renaissance played on the piano the other day--not bad, but definitely missing something. Proper Renaissance makes such excellent music because one can give it one's full attention, or it can be used as background. So versatile!

I love harp and string quartets and, of course, the clavichord. Nothing beats listening to Renaissance music played hauntingly on the clavichord.

Your knowledge of 1400s Italy is null, I see.

I happened across this from wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medieval_demography)

The period between 1348 and 1420 witnessed the heaviest loss. In Germany, about 40% of the named inhabitants disappeared. The population of Provence was reduced by 50% and in some regions in Tuscany 70% were lost during this period.

Historians have struggled to explain how so many could have died. There are problems with the long-standing theory that it was just caused by a medical illness (see further discussions at Black Death) and so social factors are looked at.

And decided to use plague as a throwaway comment in an area with apparently a lack of certainty. I was aiming for humour rather than strict historical accuracy.
