I must admit that nothing other than the Danse Macabre has ever really gripped me of Saint-Saëns' music. When it comes to classical, I am far more comfortable with Beethoven or one of the Bachs.

I take it you are not a fan of Stravinsky's, then?

I'm not too fond of outright Romanticism. I'd say I like Saint-Saens' concerto style compositions.

I can enjoy his music (some of it, at least). But it's not what I generally listen to by choice.

Not really, but courtish music is always good for BGM. I hear Strauss polka's are really hot at the downtown nightclub.

No really, there's a wide gap between Beethoven and impressionism in my music collection.

I'd say the whole of Carnival of the Animals, though it is odd that he only allowed it to be published after his death; he thought it was too frivolous for a respected composer to consider publishing under his name.

Symphony # 3 in C minor, aka Organ Symphony

After having the privilege of playing it, I have found that this is one of the most inspiring and special pieces of composition born in the Western Hemisphere during its entire history, for those who participate in the experience of interpreting it. As a listener, it is still marvelous and powerful, but my view is completely tainted by the fact that each time I remember it, my memory flies me back to the time when I was playing it in the orchestra.

It is, of course, my favourite Saint-Saëns piece.

That would have been awesome. The maestoso section is surely one of the most powerful and inspiring moments in all music. (Oddly, it was adapted as the main theme of Babe.)

The allegro at the end goes a bit over the top, though. He does have a tendency to be extrovert at times.

The Pianists, though he may have the wrong number. The Swan is 13.
