According to a 2008 report obtained by the Dallas Morning News, staff at the school sanctioned the use of "the cage" - a section of the boys' changing room barricaded by wire mesh and steel lockers - to settle disputes and bring unruly students under control.

In one incident, according to the report compiled by the local school district, the school principal at the time, Donald Moten, told staff to place two fighting pupils, "in the cage and let 'em duke it out".

On another occasion, according to the report, a member of the school's security staff tried to fight a student in the cage, but the principal intervened.

I saw this at work and was surprised that, six hours later, the NSG news scanners hadn't picked it up.

Is this Texas weirdness? A viable way to prevent school shootings? A symptom of American social breakdown?

Will a video surface?

I approve of this. I think the reason why there are so many killings is because there aren't enough beatings. *nod*

I've thought about it, I really have, but... naw, still not a good idea. I'd never get ANYTHING done.

A bit off topic, LG, what the hell is the cookie mobile handset that Jolt seems to think you're giving away?

Yes, but I have learned that anything to do with you will not do what is advertised and will probably end up with me covered in mud, pies, tacos, or a combination of all three.

Well, maybe this will work as you expect it to in order to lull you into a false sense of security for next time. Go ahead. Take a chance. :)

This was the presiding unwritten rule in high school when I was is in it. Heck, one of the coaches even kept a pair of boxing gloves and helmets for occasions when there was obvious an altercation was going to occur. Not with a cage mind you, but the general idea of "let them duke it out and get over it" ideology.

Yeah, but this was bare-knuckle. And part of the accusation was that this was, at least partially, for the entertainment of the staff. I can understand the "duke it out" position, even if I don't really agree with it, but this seems to be crossing the line to exploitation.

that's an accident and/or lawsuit waiting to happen.

Inner city high school, problem students....I doubt very much if they knew their rights, even if they could get someone to listen to them. At first I was shocked to hear it went on so long, but the more I think about it the less surprised I'd be to hear this is going on in other schools.

I didn't see that part. Still, this doesn't look like it will end well. Now I just see someone getting hurt.

No criminal charges were filed, he said, although disciplinary action was taken.

I don't know what to make of that, exactly. There was nothing criminal in all this? Or did the school board decline to go through the publicity of a trial?

South Oak Cliff is the worst Neighborhood in Dallas.
Latino gangs and African American gangs shoot it out all the time.
I am applaud personally, and I hope this principle is fired.

Principles in south Oak cliff tend to be picked for being intimidating enough that he wont be stabbed in the first week on the job. So no thank you.
