It's still winter in the northern hemisphere. Bad weather at the north pole is not exactly unprecedented in winter. Also global warming not only heats the air, but adds energy. Added energy=more frequent and stronger storms.

It's still winter in the northern hemisphere. Bad weather at the north pole is not exactly unprecedented in winter. Also global warming not only heats the air, but adds energy. Added energy=more frequent and stronger storms.

Actually, weather is created by the difference in temperature between the poles and the tropics: warm air is less dense than cold, so cold air moves from the poles to the tropics to equalize pressure which creates wind and air currents. Because it is less dense, warm air is also lighter, so when the cold air moves into areas of warm air it pushes the warm air up, which causes it to cool, making the moisture condense. The now-cooling air also moves back towards the poles to fill the space created by the cold air circulating towards the poles.

More and worse weather is caused by decreasing chaos (the increasing differences in air temperatures - increasing order). Thermodynamics and so on about moving away from order and towards chaos, which is what causes weather.

Global warming causes the poles to warm more than the tropics, slowly decreasing the difference between them. This increases chaos, decreases order, and according to every law of physics and meteorology known to man, should decrease the intensity of weather.

An experiment to do at home: Connect two buckets with a tube at the bottom. Put them at the same height, block the tube, and fill one to the top and the other almost to the top with water (the water represents energy). Unstop the tube and watch as almost nothing happens. A small amount of water will move from the full one to the almost full one, and it will move slowly. The buckets are too similar: there is too much chaos, not enough order, despite there being a lot of water (energy).
Now do the same thing, except leave the other bucket completely empty. Unstop the tube and watch water rush as quickly as possible through the tube and into the empty bucket, spraying or even arching depending on the angle and height of the tube. Less water (energy) over all, but a bigger reaction because there is more order (all the water is on one side) and there needs to be more chaos.

Also, heating the air and adding energy are the same thing.

So I suppose the fact that our winter this year has been especially mild here in Colorado is to be ignored?

I mean, March is supposed to be our snowiest month, and we've seen maybe one snowfall. Most of the month has been record high temperatures.

I would say that it's mildly ironic even if you acknowledge the difference between weather and climate. Although the touch of irony is rather overshadowed by the depressing fact that significant numbers of people are likely to consider it proof that 'global warming is a lie!!1!'.

It does if the incident is in an unusual place. Spokane seems to be getting the snow that was destined for the Sierra Nevadas. The south dries up, the moisture moves north, and suddenly the Inland Northwest needs to invest far more in plows.

here's a thought:

if you take an ice cube and stir it into a drink

(preferably Grey Goose)

the drink gets colder!

at least that's the idea.

so, if you make lots of giant ice cubes by breaking of glacier bits (a result of warming) the immediate effect is to cool things off.

i suspect this would make for cooler summers along North America's Atlantic coast for awhile

until the ice is all gone

and then...woe is us, warm vodka!

Anyone dumb enough to not research the weather report before undertaking an expedition to such a hostile place...

It's ironic, largely because for climate experts, they seem to know zilch about weather.
