Do they think the French government doesnt realize there is a global economic crisis? Oh all these people are marching because of a poor economy? Who knew? You would think they would have put it in the paper or something.

Or Greeks. Or Italians. Or many other nations.

Errr.... I think the French government knows full-well. Just because the reds are getting uppity doesn't mean that the government doesn't know what's going on.

Then you try to give them work, and they strike and complain that 35 hours a week is too much and 4 months paid vacation isnt enough. And just try to fire them once you have them no matter how shitty of an employee they are. Gotta love the French.

"This march is legitimate and useful for the country. Perhaps as a result of this march, the authorities will finally move to respond to the preoccupations of the French," former Socialist presidential candidate Segolene Royal said on RTL radio Thursday morning.
What preoccupations? Striking? :p

its good to get out of the house in the spring sunshine when you are unemployed.

perhaps they are trying to get the government to do what needs to be done to help fix the crisis. knowing its a crisis and acting effectively to end it are 2 different things.

not unlike the US govt realizing that it is wrong to give AIG workers millions in bonuses but not acting on it until the american people become enraged.

So preventing hundreds of thousands of people from getting to work is the intelligent solution? The very people the strikers are blocking are actually directly helping to SOLVE economic problems unlike strikers that just stand around and sap additional government resources due to police monitoring and crowd control.

I'm sure before Chircac it was probably Mitterand who was the most unpopular president in living memory, etc. etc.

Taking the US with its 'unique' psyche: which would work more effectively? A load of people emailing a congressman? Or a load of people on the streets in a single day of protest nationwide?

/genuine question

Aye, but I don't think either had the level of support that Sarko had during the election, though I may be mistaken.

Also, does anyone else find it amusing that English-language journalists around the world seem to be in a giant competition to pronounce 'Sarkozy' in the most extreme French accent possible?

if the protest is big enough, they are equally effective.

the only question in my mind is what the strikers want the french govt to do. is it something stupid? do they expect it to be "fixed" this week? is the govt already doing everything that is reasonable to do?

Thats easy. Americans are lazy and the country is large and wide. People rarely gather in large numbers and when they do there is always alot of news coverage. An angry email into a spam folder? Meh not so much.

This is NSG. If someone made a heart-wrenching thread about how they just had an abortion, and realized they didn't want one after the job was done, the thread would be filled with dead baby jokes.

I immediately noticed that protests, disrupting rail, and air traffic, and going on strike are not the keys to fixing the economy. Not enough work in your country? Go on strike, and show all the poor people who don't have jobs that you can be just like them! Because the answer to a poor economy, is to make the economy worse.

Fight fire with fire.

Also... seriously... can't the French just calm down, and give one of their governments a break. The French people have been at war with ever government they've had since they stormed the Bastille... at least give one of the new ones a chance for a few months.

Cigarettes. You see, cigarettes are called "fags" in the UK. In the US, homosexuals are called "fags". That's why "Britfags" was used. To clarify which definition of "fags" he means.

And those wacky fags. If half the energy that went into rioting went into their military, their military wouldn't be laughed at. If the other half went into curing stuff, AIDS and cancer would have been wiped out long ago. But the French like problems, which explains the rioting, the irony of their protesting, and their involvement in the whole "Oil for Food" mess.

I agree. France is so damn useless. They even punish their own entrepreneurs.
