Rooney's Irish road trip
President Obama calls his nominee for ambassador 'an unwavering supporter of Irish peace, culture and education'
As ambassador-designate, Dan Rooney is heading to a Dublin whose economic troubles pose a challenging new context for the traditionally strong ties between the U.S. and the Republic of Ireland.
Congratulations, Ireland!
(Dan Rooney is the owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers, the (American) football team.)
As an aside, what does everything think of appointing people with little or no diplomatic experience to be diplomats?
Again, Ireland does not care what your ambassador-designate owns. :p

Ah.
Well, I wish him all the best over here. Not exactly a steely kind of place altogether, though.

I guess that its alright to pick someone who isn't actually a diplomat when the relationship between the two countries is quite relaxed as it is between the US and Ireland. Its not like he's ambassador to, say, Israel or Venezuela.

Or hates the place he's supposed to go to, like John Bolton.

For an extraordinarily confusing second I thought that the OP was referring to the Sheffield Steelers (www.sheffieldsteelers.co.uk/). Why Ireland would have anything to do with British Ice Hockey was quite beyond me...

Yeah, I'm sure the fact that he's not going there with the belief that Ireland should be dismantled can only be a bonus.
That's just it - he'll be bringing one to Ireland. ;)
Pfft, we have, like, 3 of our own.

it is quite appropriate to select an ambassador with no experience, when your secretary of state is in a likewise boat. Cant have the Ambassadors showing up the secretary of state after all.

so wait the US could of just sent an ambassador in during 60's and the Irish would of calmed down and gone to theater school?

Everyone knows Ambassadors are just figureheads. The people who do the real work are career diplomats, who would never dream of standing in the historic tradition of rewarding campaign supporters with Ambassadorships.
I hope to be a career diplomat one day!

If a man in a nondescript suit came up to me one day and handed me a slip of paper with the address of a defunct and (thought to be) abandoned warehouse on it, I would definitely go. :P
But I think passing the FSE is probably within my reach, while being CIA... perhaps less so.
