Even President Bush shows some class re "The Dark Lord"

Former President George W. Bush, making his first public speech since leaving office in January, says he wants President Barack Obama to succeed and that it's "essential" to support the new leader. Bush declined to critique the Obama administration in Tuesday's speech, saying the new president has enough critics and that he "deserves my silence."

Bush spoke in Calgary, Canada on March 17, 2009. The invitation-only event titled a "Conversation with George W. Bush" attracted close to 2,000 guests who paid $3,100 per table. Former President George W. Bush said that if President Obama wants help, “he can pick up the phone and call.” Otherwise, Bush said: “He deserves my silence.”

“There's plenty of critics in the arena,” Bush told a crowd in Calgary, Canada. “I think it's time for the ex-president to tap dance off the stage and let the current president have a go at solving the world's problems. If he wants my help and I agree with him, I'll give it.”

“I want to say something about Barack Obama. Now, he was not my first choice for president. But when he won, I thought it was good for the United States of America. I was deeply touched and deeply moved when I saw African-Americans weeping on TV saying, ‘I never thought it was possible.’ I want the president to succeed. I love my country a lot more than I love politics. I think it is essential that he be helped in the office. …

“My staff did a fabulous job. I had a great chief of staff named Josh Bolten who walked in in the summer of '08, and he said: ‘Whoever wins, we're going to help them on the transition.’ And it's important that Obama had the support from us. And now he's in the Oval. And there's no way to describe what it means, the sense of responsibility that comes. And I can't help him any more than this: I'm not going to spend my time criticizing him.”

I agree. I believe that Dick Cheney and his cronies only showed him positive sides of issues which mortified the rest of the country, and thus made us loath him. He probably is sitting on his Texas ranch thinking, "What the FUCK?! Why does everyone hate me?!"

lol funny story behind that...I'm from Florida, and he drove through my town waving and taking pictures with his wife in my hometown, which had been devestated by three consecutive hurricane strikes. His personal helicopter came and landed in a field a few miles away from my condominium, and he flew by at low level waving at all the people. What I don't think he noticed was that we weren't waving back, about five hundred people were flipping him the bird. :D

On a personal level, with people he knows. Also, we don't know how much of that was a result of being not "nice" and how much of it was being genuinely misguided, unimaginative, mislead by his advisors - remember Presidents really don't know anything that their advisors don't want them to know unless they actively pursue it - and I doubt that he actively pursued information.

I didn't vote for Obama... and I'm not a fan of his economic tomfoolery... but I really agree with Bush on this. Obama is our elected leader, and $800,000,000,000 pork chops isn't enough to, say impeach him, or make any other such legal move against him.

He deserves our (that is to say everyone's) respect as our leader until he does something catastrophic on some kind of moral ground. Like I said, I'm not his biggest fan... but I'm sure hoping he does a good job, now would be a good time for it, and I'm glad Bush can step aside gracefully, and not criticize... in fact, this 'endorsement' by Bush is probably the most harmful thing he could've done to Obama! :tongue:

It's unfortunate that there were two past Presidents that didn't share that sentiment during the GWB years. I think we could have done quite well without Mr Carter and Mr Clinton trying so hard to give advice.

I don't recall putting a bound on my wish. Whether or not they remained silent during the first 60, or even 100 days, they certainly had no reservations about criticizing him during the remaining 7+ years of his term.

I think the general public that view obama as some sort of god and bush as some sort of demon is the exact reason why most other developed countries call us the 'most unintelligent developed country'. most idiots would take the drug deluded theory of oliver stone ('w') as the truth, just as they would take what obama says as the truth. the real truth is that almost no one knows what the fuck they are talking about. All these big companies that are misusing the money that we already don't have that they are being given to save their asses? obama approved. the 800 billion dollar road and job repair plan? only 5% goes to road and job repair. obama approved. he is only paying back all the campaign contributors and is no different that bush or nixon or even hitler for that matter. just a charismatic guy who wants to be president for his own glory and lied about everything to get his shot.
