Holidays

I like holidays. I don't care what the reason, I'll take any excuse to celebrate. I'm not Christian, but I'll celebrate Christmas. I'm not Mexican, but I'll observe Cinco de Mayo. About the only holidays I don't at least tip the hat to are Ramadan (30 days of fasting - Nuh uh - though I do note that it's only during the daylight hours), Yom Kippur (Fasting and atonement - no) and Lent (40 days of doing without something I enjoy, not gonna happen), but anything that involves feasting, gifts, music and bright colors, singing, dancing and general enjoyment, I'm for it. And if it involves time off from work - even better (though that's not really a concern for me anymore).

So, what says NSG? Are you a person who enjoys a reason to celebrate, regardless of whose reason it is? Or are you one of those who won't celebrate a holiday that's not part of your particular calendar? Do you atheists celebrate Xmas because it's fun? Or do you ignore it because celebrating would by "hypocritical?"

What's your take on holidays?

I enjoyed Holidays when I worked at a place that observed them. but now that I don't, I enjoy anything I can get!

:fluffle: I think I love you. I printed the list out and am going to enter it all on my calendar. *anticipates 365 days of merrymaking.*

Two of my favorite holidays are coming up/currently happening: St. Patricks Day, which is really a week long celebration around here complete with the huge parade in Southie and lots of Irish car bombs, and Marathon Monday/Patriots Day, a day when all of MA shuts down...it's the first weekend it's really warm enough to grill and drink heavily in public with friends, and go cheer on the runners.

What I love about holidays are people collectively deciding "Hey, lets not be assholes today!" and just having a good time. The days that I can share a beer with the police (though, this is getting less common) instead of getting a drinking in public citation, or the days that we all get together for a big meal and having fun. I really don't need much of a reason...

lots of Irish car bombs

Sounds fun. I particularly enjoy knocking down down World Trade Centres as well.

August 17 - Woodstock festival ends, 1969.
August 18 - People who passed out at Woodstock realize the festival ended yesterday, 1969.

September 5 - Hijacking planes becomes illegal, 1961 (So... it was legal before?)

December 23 - Congress passes a tax simplification guide which is 1,379 pages in length, 1985.

What's with making up a holiday on the 26th of December when millions of people around the world celebrate it as Boxing Day?

I prefer the suggestion in the other thread for "Exploding Towers". I picture it as a flaming double shot.

Jamesons, Guinness, and Baileys taste good together and get you drunk. I didn't pick the name.

I like holidays, although I don't really do anything to celebrate alot of them. I go to church on Christmas Eve and Easter, and spend Thanksgiving and Christmas Days with family. I'm too much of a Protestant to celebrate Lent, and my dislike of crowds X's out Mardi Gras. I will go out and celebrate St. Patrick's Day, but one of my favorite dates to celebrate is Dec. 21, 1991.

It isn't hypocritical for non-Christians to celebrate Christmas... err X'mas. I was raised irreligious, and X'mas was the time of year when we enjoyed the winter fantasyland of elves and Santa Claus(e).

The memories of X'mas is good enough for me to enjoy this holiday, I don't need to justify it.

I'm not a big fan of the holidays for X group of people to drink, like St. Paddy's, Cinco de Mayo, Juneteenth, Oktoberfest, etc. I think the U.S. just needs to create a "get plastered together" holiday. Promote unity, you know.

We do have one. It's called X'mas, where people of all faiths and heritage come together to worship Jesus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consumerism) Christ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wall_Street).

We have several - Independence Day, Thanksgiving, Labor Day, Memorial Day, Saturday ...
