EDIT2: STILL LOOKING FOR SOMEONE TO GO TO THE DEAD CONCERT NEXT WEEKEND!!
I am generally curious as to whether anyone else is a fan or critic of the Grateful Dead. More specifically, I am curious as to whether anyone would like to attend The Dead's May 9, 2009 concert in Los Angeles with me.
The Dead (http://www.dead.net/) are back together (minus the actually dead) and are touring. Here (http://www.dead.net/dead09) is tour and ticket information.
I happen to be a devoted fan of the Grateful Dead. I also happen to have 2 VIP tickets to the LA show, but no one to go with me. Anyone interested? :fluffle:
Please also discuss your love, hatred, or indifference toward the Dead.
EDIT: Two things I should emphasize regarding my search for someone to attend The Dead concert on May 9th.
1. The VIP tickets are already paid for and I don't expect compensation -- monetary or otherwise -- I just want someone to use the ticket and hang out with me.
2. I'm not being particularly altruistic in making this offer. I don't want to go by myself and I consider NSG a group of friends.

I can't see any real reason to hate the Dead and Deadheads in general. All the shows look less like concerts and more like one big social event.

But unfortunately, London to LA and back in time for finals seems an unrealistic prospect, so I shall just sit here and glower with envy.

Wait...I have multiple "albums?"
How about "I have several trays worth of slowly decaying 2nd and 3 gen tapes of live shows from back before the days of downloading them or buying Dicks Picks."
I've been to 50+ shows, and a whole bunch of Phil and Friends and Ratdog shows from the last few years.
And I'm not going this summer. $100 a ticket seems so against anything that was the Dead scene I remember. And I always paid for my tickets. I have my good memories. I don't need to buy them back.

I had the mark just as plain as day

rolling loaded dice,
ace of spades behind his ear
and him not thinking twice

Hello baby, I'm gone, goodbye
Half a cup of rock and rye
Farewell to you old southern sky
I'm on my way - on my way
If all you got to live for
is what you left behind
get yourself a powder charge
and seal that silver mine
I lost my boots in transit babe
A pile of smoking leather
Nailed a retread to my feet
and prayed for better weather
Half-step
Mississippi Uptown Toodleloo
Hello, baby, I'm gone, good-bye
Half a cup of rock and rye
Farewell to you old southern sky

The second takes the afterdeck
The third the planks and rails
What's the point to callin shots?
This cue ain't straight in line
Cueball's made of styrofoam

For true deadheads, that’s not even a lot….a couple of shows on Spring and Fall tour, a few summer shows... And, knowing my limits, I remember all of them. (But, I played “mom” to a lot of people who didn’t.)
I took my kids to see Phil last summer for their first show. I said afterwards that if I never went to another show, I could be happy, because it had all the best elements of all the good shows I’d been to in the past. The band sounded great, the crowd was small and friendly, there was plenty of space to spread out and dance on the hillside… I can’t imagine taking them to one of the stadium shows I’d been to, especially in those last few years where things were getting way out of hand.
And I don’t truly bemoan people for spending $100 to go, I was kind of teasing with that – I spent $60 on tickets last summer and it was worth it. If I'd never been before I'd consider it, but I've been there, done that, and had a good time, so I'm content to call my limit and stay home this summer.
So have a good time, and I hope you get to hear the sweet refrains of Ripple under the canopy of a warm starry night, because it just doesn’t get any better than that.

I understand the appeal of Grateful Dead but I just can't do it. Every time I've listened to them high on the weed, they (bizarrely) have made me nervous. From what I understand, they are supposed to do the opposite. People I respect are fans and they make convincing arguments for why I should be a fan but I am not a fan.

Two things I should emphasize regarding my search for someone to attend The Dead concert on May 9th.
