I like a good and simple vodka cranberry.

My favorite drink is pretty elaborate though.

Tequilla, about 3-4 shots
Fruit Punch 2 cups
Orange Soda 1/2 cup
Ice

Toss ingrediants in blender and blend on low to keep the carbination from going insane. Add ice until you get it as liqidy or slushy as you want. Tis good stuff.

Add blue food coloring and you have a Dr. Manhattan.

I'm also partial to margaritas, tequila sunrises and mojitos.

Moscow Mules are great indeed.

I'm a big fan of Manhattans, occassionally a Rusty Nail to switch things up.

*looks at clock, wonders if it's really too early for a Manhattan*

Well - for me it's the Martini. Sorry for being boring, not exactly exotic, but there's a reason it's so famous.

I know most people actually don't like it, though. It's an acquired taste. Buy 6-10 different bottles of gin, 4-5 different bottles of vermouth, several cans of olives, try out the combinations. After about 50 drinks, you should find the right stuff. Comes like a flash. Repeat it a number of times, vary the ratios, and then you'll get it. In some time, you'll learn which kinds are right for you.

For me it's proper Gin Martini. I like various ratios, from perfect to 1:6, usually either perfect or 1:4. Not that I don't like "dry Martini" aka gin alone, but I lack the hypocrisy to call it "dry Martini". As for Vodka Martini, it only goes well when dirty (with olive brine). The brine can spoil the taste of gin, but gives taste to vodka.

What I utterly despise is any form of sweet cocktail. Unfortunately, that makes it hard for me to get a good gin tonic, as pretty much all tonic water today has sugar in it, killing the whole point.

It's famous because of Bond, James Bond. Otherwise it would still be solely the domain of cranky old people that start drinking shortly after 10 in the morning.

I've tried this multiple times before. I always fall over after 15 or so, and the next morning I can't remember which one I liked best.

I'm partial to either mojitos (which remind me of my ex in a good way), or simple rum and cokes... I used to adore pina coladas, but I used a flavoured lube that tasted like pina coladas once upon a time and now I can't drink them. :p

My roommate adores Porn Stars (the cocktail, not the shot), which are also pretty tasty.

Blue Curacao is coloured artificially, though. It's naturally colourless; it also tastes like oranges, so it wouldn't taste like a Manhattan anymore.

If you were going to colour a Manhattan, you'd have to use a pretty light-coloured whisky. Ardbeg, maybe? I usually use rye, but it's got such a rusty colour I don't know that the blue colouring would come through properly.

1) There's nothing wrong with drinking after 10 a.m.
2) Winston Churchill and FDR were drinking martinis long before Dr. No made Bond a pop culture icon. Ergo, martinis won WWII and anyone that disses them wanted the Nazis to win.

Churchill's idea of a martini was a drinking straight gin while in the same room with a bottle of vermouth (possibly there were olives in the room, too), so he doesn't count.

I love almost all "girly" cocktails. Margaritas are probably my favorite - frozen, on the rocks, plain lime, or with any of a dozen other fruits, they're all delicious.

Zombies (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zombie_cocktail) are pretty nice. Strong too. But I know only one place in Dublin that sells them, and that is its only virtue.

I've had mixed results with my own Deathmix. Mainly because I have mixed ingredients. What happens is the warm stale left overs of the night before are poured into a big bottle and left until its full, then drank. Nasty stuff, sometimes.

Not really. Flemming just took an already famous drink and made it even more famous. The only people who have heard of Martini from Bond movies are those who haven't drank anything before anyway. Incidentally, most of them take exactly one taste of martini to get disappointed.

What separates a great drink from a random cocktail is three things:
- Matching ingredients. Combining the incompatible tastes can be fun for a try, but doesn't last.
- Uniqueness. A great drink will produce a third, unique taste, not just feel like one of its ingredients.
- Variability. A wide range of brands and proportions should work well, not just a single recipe.

Martini is a classic case in point. Gin and dry vermouth both have strong herbal flavors. But gin by itself has a burning mouthfeel and vermouth just doesn't taste any good on its own. Martini, however, doesn't taste like either; it's neither gin-like, nor vermouth-like, but a synergy of the best points of both with none of the drawbacks. Finally, there are hundreds of recipes, and most of them are good.

Another classic case is Gin and Tonic (I don't mean flavored ethanol solution in cans). Both have a sharp, slightly or strongly bitter taste. However, it's impossible to confuse G&T with either. And, of course, it can vary widely too.

Not such a case is virtually all fruity cocktails. They mix ingredients not for a synergetic effect, but merely to hide the alcohol behind the taste of juice. That doesn't make them bad, of course, but they'll never be the great drinks, because they're just that, alcoholized juice.

Heh. Condolences. They really loved it, though. A treat, rather than a punishment. That's probably where we get the phrase "what do you want, egg in your beer?" when we tease someone who's never satisfied with what they have. I hadn't made the connection 'til just now.
