Well, NSGers, you, through some circumstance, have been forced to decide which country you have to live in, and you are stuck with three choices

North Korea
Somalia

and

Zimbabwe

Which one of these would you rather live in? I would have to pick Zimbabwe, at least things are starting to get a little bit better there and there are plenty of opportunities to get wealthy. Plus, you can be a billionaire.

Somalia. If nothing else, easiest to get out of.

Somalia isn't bad compared to the other two. Economically Somalia is pretty competitive with most countries in Africa.

I almost voted North Korea because when someone does run across the boarder they tend to treat them very well so they can give press accounts about North Korea being a paradise.

I went with Zimbabwe as it might be the easiest to escape from. South Africa might not be so bad assuming I could sneak across the border. If however I was forced to stay in one possibly I might choose Somalia as it seem they are coming out of their troubles while Zimbabwe is just starting.

I reckon you could make a decent go of it in Somaliland, if we're counting it as part of Somalia.

Well I don't know any of that (thank goodness) .. with Africa.. I was thinking of killer tribes and shit.. Asians can be far more ruthless.. but given my chances .. N Korea would probably be much safer compared. They at least have a gov and laws.

Do you know anything about the conditions in North Korea? You'd last about an hour there, I'd predict.

Among other things Somalia and Zimbabwe have less of than North Korea are concentration camps to which multiple generations of a family are sent for the alleged offense of one family member. (See, e.g., http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2004/feb/01/northkorea )

They do, however, have more ways to get out of the country.

Zimbabwe. Easier to get out of, and S. Africa is right hard by there, and they have an airport, where I can get a flight back to America.

too true. At least in Somalia you can do whatever the hell you like before being killed. North Korea you'd either slowly starve to death or be shot for not staring at a picture of 'Dear Leader' long enough (or something equally petty).

I'm not too worried about the Ethiopians. I'll bribe them with massive deliveries of foodstuffs(and beads)and tell them that if they just turn their heads for a minute they won't have to worry about Somalia anymore.

that's the goal. but if you do is entirely up to you.

Well, out of the three, NK is actually the only one where people aren't in absolute poverty.

On the other hand, if you miss a step in NK, you'll be imprisoned and likely tortured; in Somalia or Zimbabwe, at worst you'll just be killed. Or you can starve to death if you don't earn enough to eat.

So - it's safer in Somalia and Zimbabwe, but with much worse conditions. It would be a tough choice which I'd rather not make. Still, practically, NK is all a big army, and I have some experience with that. Living in a dirt hut and starving, not so much. For living in, with being born in there, that would be NK.
For dropping in "as is" and possibly eventually getting out of it, Zimbabwe.

But on ideological reasons, I much prefer Somalia.

It's true. Somaliland and Puntland are relatively safe and stable areas in the northern parts of Somalia. The violent anarchy that you find in Mogadishu isn't present there.

If I had to choose, it would be between Zimbabwe (where there's hope for improvement) and the western parts of Somaliland (away from any border disputes with Puntland).

I'm less likely to be killed just because of my skin colour (or because of my country's colonial past) over there. Also, there are less risks of getting killed in a US-led invasion (the US aren't too keen to attack an actual nuclear power).

I once missed the last train and in the hours of waiting for the first one, I chatted with an immigrant from Zimbabwe who barely spoke German and very African English. It was not easy, but it was easier than learning Korean.

Seriously? I wanted to learn Korean when in high school (well, equivalent) because the only friend I had was Korean, but after reading about the various grammatical oddities of the language, I chickened out.

The reason I choose N Korea is because their leader is old and ill and will soon die, which could be a good thing... at least it would provide an opening for ambitious citizens like me!

I have a morbid fascination with NK. I try to learn as much about it and the people as I can. I have not done much searching over the past month though. I cant believe that I missed a perfect pizza declaration by KJI. I will have to look that up soon.
