This is not so. Actually the Web dates from 1993, not 1989. Web AWKI, about 1995-1998.

That one of thousands of dudes who came up with ideas of Internet all around the 80s did so in 1989 doesn't mean anything significant, and considering he didn't even come up with Internet specifically, unlike others... well, that kinda doesn't mean anything at all.

Because they are talking about the (world wide) web, not about the internet. There is a difference ;)

In that case, everyone knows that giant silicon spiders built the web, not some English guy.

What? Hey, it's three am, you want the high-quality funny you have to be around for prime-time.

'cause Internet =/= WWW
A useless distinction in this fast paced world of things that go "Squeak!" when you squeeze them.

Well, Berners-Lee is generally credited with devising the WWW, and it sounds like about the right time, so it seems vaguely reasonable. Of course, it isn't actually the internet, but we can excuse complete ignorance on the behalf of journalists, I suppose.

Actually, they're roughly three years early if they're talking about the WWW, and (depending where you count from) 15-20 years late if they're talking about the internet proper. Ah well.

well, i'm no expert, but Sir Tim is credited with the www. protocol, building on his, and others', work on http and the Dynatext SGML reader. but his particular model of URL-DNS-IP communication is pretty essential to the way the web works today, even if it wasn't the only model (DNS-IP goes back to ARPAnet, so i understand). to say he single-handedly invented the internet is going too far, but the man deserves credit where it is due.

TBL deserves credit for the WWW, or at least most of it. The internet, however, is something different, and predates the web by quite a lot.
