How do you envision [person X]

Galloism
08-03-2009, 19:17
So, I was combing through some of my old posts, and apparently I'm a tall short fat skinny guy with a tiny monstrously huge penis wearing a full Darth Vader costume with bolts attached to my neck.

That's quite the mental image I've got going there. When you talk to me, how do you picture Galloism?

For bonus points, how do you picture:

LG
Ashmoria
Katganistan
Cat-Tribe
SaintB
Kryozerkia

Or, am I crazy for trying to picture the people I'm talking to?

I...don't envision what anyone looks like on here. One of the beautiful things about teh internets is that you can debate things without superficial things like their age, appearence, fashion sense or whatever making you think them less credible. Which is why I for one am not a great fan of all those "what do you look like" threads, because for a day or so until I forget what you look like again, it can't help but sit in the back of your mind as you reply to someone.

I also have trouble thinking of people on the internet as real people to be totally honest. To me you're all just a bunch of 0s and 1s that come out of a server, down the intertubes and to my computer. Are you people? AIs that fled destruction after narrowly failing the Turing test? Chimps on acid hammering at a keyboard randomly? Who knows?

I try to picture the people because it helps me keep a civil tone, and not think of other posters as just words my computer spits out (even though I'm pretty sure that's what at least half of you are).

LG Mid-thirties, doesn't have a great body but doesn't mind others seeing it.
Ashmoria Late-fifties, short. Elderly but not old, if that makes any sense.
Katganistan My mother.
Cat-Tribe Um...I actually think of Cat-Tribe as looking like his avatar: some sort of cat-man hybrid. I've never really thought of him as looking like a human. (Guess my strategy failed there.)
SaintB Don't see his posts enough to have an image in my mind.
Kryozerkia Again, someone who I associate with an avatar. In this case, it's Kryozerkia's former avatar (not the cat with toilet paper), even though I'm pretty sure Kryo is neither male nor manga.

I do think of them as thinking, feeling beings, though....

I don't really have a mental image of how people look (apart from basic things like age or gender) - but I'm still often surprised when I eventually see a picture of them. Dunno how that works.

I've seen pics of Katganistan, Kryozerkia, LG (covered in mud) and I think Ashmoria, though, so I obviously picture them according to those.

If I've seen a picture of someone, then I picture them looking like their picture (which means that, yes, LG is eternally covered in mud as far as my brain is concerned). Otherwise, I rarely form any sort of coherent mental image at all beyond a vague sense of age and gender.

These two.

Consciously and rationally I know most of you guys are real people. But I don't really believe it. Moreover, were I to meet any NSers in real life, I would cease to consider them "internet people" and start thinking of them as "real people" -- calling them by their real names or nicknames rather than their usernames online, for instance.

But I must admit, reading how people picture me and others always amuses me, provided they form an interesting picture and not just "oh yeah, you're that guy with the light blue flag for an avatar and 448 posts."

Generally, I try not visualize NSG for the same reason that I don't think about my breathing or the functioning of my nervous system. It works, somehow, and the less I think about it the better able I am to focus on important things. Like the shape of my finger nails.

In my more paranoid moments, I imagine that NSG is a huge, elaborate Turing Test. At some point, I'll be woken up in the middle of the morning when a man in a lab coat breaks through my window. He'll immediately leap to his feet, point in my direction and shout, "All the posters on the internet forum Nationstates General were computers, except for one! What was the name of the only human poster?"
At which point I'll grab my head and scream, "I can't do pop quizzes until afternoon. Why didn't you just use the door? Who are you?"
He shall then laugh and say, "It was a trick question. You were the only human, and you spent four years talking with a series of conversation simulators. Isn't that sad?"
Then he'll calmly walk out the door, and I'll be left to deal with the broken shards of glass now covering my floor.

I tend to picture people based on what I see their arguing styles as.

Neo Art I picture as sort of a knight with a big-ass sword, the kind that tells the enemies he's coming, but wins anyways.

Murv, Chun Li.

LG, a trickster type. Or maybe the Trickster from The Flash...

Nanatsu, I see as Yoruichi Shihoin. :D

Unless I have some visual clue, I tend to imagine that everyone is mildly goodlooking and roughly my age group, with the only variation being gender, if known.

However, if someone has a figurative avatar, I will imagine them as looking a little bit like their avatar. So those of you who picked an avatar for lulz, now you're stuck with it. :p

It's not fair. I think the person who does the classes did it on purpose.

So, you're stuck two hours a day in a room full of women, and you're upset about this? You know, some men pay hundreds of dollars for that.

I don't picture posters, I take pictures of them. Generally while they shower.

What's really creepy about this is that my bathroom has no windows.

...I've had a pic in my signature for ages...I think I'll go update it.

After talking for thirty minutes without a breath, you would think they would just keel over and be quiet for a moment. But, no. They just keep talking, and talking, and talking, and talking, etc. If you want to be in there with nothing but teenage girls doing nothing but talking about what Mallorey/Lizzy/Candy/Will/Bill/Mark/Cindy/etc. did that weekend, you go right ahead.

...And now I have to go to the horror. :(

That wouldn't stop them. They'd just chew through em and keep talking.

If you separate them into adjacent boxes of soundproof glass, you can entertain yourself for hours watching them try to teach themselves rudimentary sign language. :)

I'm afraid I don't. I have to pick and choose the ones that I think need my unique talents. I may not need much sleep, but my family, friends, job and hobbies keep me pretty busy. It's for the best. They know how dangerous I am when I'm bored. :)

Well, I just ask because every time I mention your name, you appear, which seems to indicate you read every thread I post in.

Either that, or you run forum searches for your name. I haven't decided.

Maybe LG just likes reading the kinds of threads you're also interested in reading. Or maybe he's omniscient. Y'know.

First criterion - Did Galloism make the thread?
Second criterion - Is Galloism listed as the replier to the thread?

If answer to either is yes, LG reads. :p

Criterion. Criteria is plural.

And he also seems to read a lot of other threads. So maybe he just likes reading threads on NSG. Or maybe he's interested in seeing your valuable, insightful perspective on whatever the subject is.

On the contrary, I imagine you as short, squat, slightly overweight, wearing dark trousers and a grease-stained, off-white shirt that's two sizes too small. You're also significantly younger than you project yourself - perhaps 18/19.

Btw, in your sig? You got your ass handed to you in that debate about Chile, so, so many times...I think it's highly amusing that you've claimed victory when every time you've been rebutted successfully you simply run away, wait, and post the same bullshit again.

I do think that Riddle wasn't evil looking until later on when he starting really getting into the dark stuff, you know after leaving Hogwarts . . .

*shrug* If you're tired of intellectual dishonesty and substitution of other realities for the one most of us share, give it exactly the amount of thought and consideration it deserves.

None at all.

Now how do I see Neesika? hmmmm.... I see her in a sharp and snazzy business suit (given her intellectual pursuits as teacher and law student) with a flirtatiously open to the third (or fourth) button crisp white shirt, giving a hint to lacy underpinnings... leather cuffs, tightly braided hair, and the ability to whip out a metal frying pan containing sizzling Canadian bacon (aka ham) drizzled with yummy maple syrup to bonk someone upside the head with when they make a particularly stupid remark. ;)
