Worse than that. People eating their pets, and then fighting for the last tin of dog food to feed themselves for the week.

You're going to have to eat the lady downstairs. Wow. That does sound like an innuendo.

In a few months there will be anarchy on the streets, an entirely collapsed economy and offers of economic aid from Zimbabwe.

That's the rate you usually hear quoted in the news, I believe. I think it just takes out the military jobs, because they don't really count and don't contribute a whole lot to the economy (or at least any measurement of its health).

*googles*

The number of unemployed people divided by the total size of the labor force, expressed as a percentage. People who are jobless, looking for jobs, and available for work are considered unemployed. The labor force is defined as people who are either employed or unemployed.

though I think its come up before that reserve military forces seem to boom in times of recession (pays for my alcohol atm) might be something worth looking at

No, no it is not. 13th Amendment, U.S. Constitution.

"Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime where of the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction."

well I was just thinking that Alaska (maybe the mid west) could do with some development and that maybe we should start running program's to move people over to unpopulated areas to build small communities

then I realized that would be a gulag

and yet we still have a draft. adn we can always make unemployment a crime.

700 people fighting for a janitorial job. WoW.

I grew up just a hop skip and a jump away, went to Hoover, played in Perry's band show every year when I was in High School.

Given the local comparisons, though, they should not be paying a janitor that much. Most district's in Ohio top out their janitorial salary at 16 dollars an hour, it's definitely not a starting wage. They are out of line with state and peer averages with that pay rate.

I don't think so. It's not particularly exciting stuff compared to the real world, and the pay is dodgy even compared to normal people salaries.

I pretty much decided that the most I'm going to do is either an MBA or a Masters in Econ or Financial Engineering (if it turns out that the latter is still of any value 5 or 10 years from now). I'd actually like to do it in the States at one of the good schools to see what all the fuss is about.

Well I don't know how it is in AUS, but in the US professors do okay money wise.

I'm pretty sure financial engineering is dead.

Edit: Don't bother with the good schools in the US unless you have the money to burn out of curiosity. My girlfriend is a stern grad (NYU) back from when it was a top ten, and she said - along with many classmates - that it is basically just ticket punching.

The economy hasn't yet hit rock bottom -- but that drill it's holding is a sign it's not prepared to stop when it does.

Also, a professorship can be anywhere from $30k to $150k a year -- depending on how high the position, how prestigious the university, whether the candidate receives tenure, et cetera.

the thing with professors is a lot of the money comes from the books they write.

Write a book have it get used in a few classes and you can make a ton of money off royalties. just be certain to write a new edition every 2 years so people cant just use the used books.

But Russia is all the way over there. I don't wanna go all that way just to eat ukha and blini. Especially if it is going to be cold.
Canada is much more conveniently located, and I'm sure the Alaskans would love being a contiguous state.

Nothing strange. It's just a step into becoming like Italy... where sport palaces are routinely rented by the local administrations to host the tests for 10 jobs as local police officer.
