UnReal World?

Conserative Morality

Has anyone played it? Well, other than me I mean. For those of you who haven't (And, for once, I cannot shame you all if you haven't) it's a very realistic, almost roguelike game that takes place in Iron Age Finland (Last time I check that was the story). The whole reason I like the game is because it doesn't have a story, your only goal is to survive. Very interesting game. Link (http://www.jmp.fi/~smaarane/urw.html)

Has anyone else played it?

No, it sounds shit and you ostensibly have to pay.

What game don't you have to pay for the full version? (Other than freeware and abandonware, obviously) At least there's a demo. The only part about the demo is that you can't save.

Pay for a roguelike? Hah. Not bloody likely.

It... It has graphical tiles! It only wants to be loved!

Besides, that tone of condescension suggests only an idiot would pay for a roguelike, and I paid for a registration.

...

What?

Yeah you know what else has real graphics?

Many genuinely high-quality titles which don't live by the virtue that incredibly misguided nerds will defend anything so long as it's crap and indie enough.

That, my friend, is the gaming equivalent of the NME. EUGH.

1. What in God's name is the NME?

2. With all truth, this isn't about the game being 'Indie'. It's just the sandbox-ness of the game, the medieval (Iron-age?) life simulation I like so much. Than again, I'm the same guy who still plays 'Alter Ego', so say what you like.

Oh, good. It's not another recycling of the UnReal Tournament game series. I might have to take a closer look.

The New Musical Express, of course. A studenty rag which formerly had really nice images but is now the nadir of journalism. Bleuch to faux-intellectualism, I say. Bleugh.

The Iron Age is like eh 400AD, although with the Finns being as backwards as they are, for them it was probably 1923 onwards or something.

Played it (protection bypassed), liked while it lasted, not loved.

It's a very nice game while you are trying to survive, exploring the possibilities - hunting, fishing, gathering. Trading, food preservation, caves and plains, logging, fires. By winter you have to be building the house, the cellar, and all that. Preparing for the winter and trying to survive it is fun too.

But then, the traps laid out, the experience, and the improved character skills make the game too easy for the second winter. I know people who went beyond that, sabotaged villages, got a wife, etc., or, on the contrary, played for challenge, starting in the winter on a bad map, but IMHO it takes that perverted devotion to the game I don't have.

I still die on most of my Characters before I finish the advanced adventures. Although, it has improved a lot in terms of difficulty, no more falling into spiked trap pits and living, no more multiple blows to the head, and no more quick groundwork.:(

Probably better that way though.

"Real graphics" are irrelevant. Graphics don't make the game.

Roguelikes are actually better games than anything else out there; especially the king of them all, NetHack. Infinite replayability, great storylines, being able to uncover something new every time you play...roguelikes are actually superior games.

If anything, the interface of a traditional Roguelike makes the game even better because it allows you to engage your imagination even more, immersing you deeper into the story than otherwise.

They certainly make them better, though. A game isn't made or unmade by having decent graphics, but something which looks like someone sicked on my monitor had best be enjoyable - personally I don't feel that way about Roguelikes at all.

A bold claim if ever there was one.

On the other hand, Finland has plenty of redeeming qualities. Like Poets of the Fall. Unlike Germany, which gave us World War 1, World War 2, and Uwe Boll.

No they didn't. They fought part of the Russian army to a standstill, in Winter, with the terrain on their side, and still had to cede Karelia.

And as I previously said, Finland were defending, giving them an advantage, but also the terrain combined with the winter added to that advantage. It's not like they even won the war.

...Against a larger, better equipped army. They were outnumbered 4-1 in manpower, and overwhelmingly so when it came to tanks. They didn't win, but they did a damn good job with what they had.

The average soldiers were completely demoralised and against the war, and almost all the senior officers have been executed during the Great Purge. The Italians had also supplied the Finns with 100,000 rifles, and many other countries were sending volunteers, equipment etc. You're wrong.
