Is it possible to legally transfer DVDs to computer in Canada? If so, what software is the most accessible and useful?

Thank you

don't quote me but i think if you own the DVD you can make one backup copy.

I use Alcohol 120% to copy DVDs. It's easy enough to use. I don't know if it allows copying a copy-protected disc, though. The ones I copy were intended for redistribution by the copyright holder. It creates an image file that is read on a virtual DVD drive (done within Alcohol 120%) and would only be able to read those files on other computers with similar virtual drives.

I have no knowledge of copyright law in Canada. Sorry I can be of no help there.

Does the definition of backup copy include a digital copy (non-disc)?

Who really cares, unless you are only going to be using it to distribute thousands of copies. But if it is just for your own use, I wouldn't worry about the legality of it just do it. If the police come and bust you for it then I will pay your bail.

Thanks, but I was interested in ripping only copyrighted discs (movies, TV series).

i think it explains it at the start of the movie. when the copyright warning comes across.

I have a fear of being v&. Besides, I have a reputation for not illegally downloading/distributing anything on computers. I like to keep that standard.

Most of the copyright warning says FBI, so I'm not sure if it applies to Canada.

You really should drop that fear of yours especially if you think you will get dragged out at 4 in the morning over something as silly as this, but ok.

How do you get a reputation for not doing those things?

IIRC it's legal to make at least one copy of your own disc for own use in virtually all countries; that includes a copy on alternate media.

In Canada, furthermore, you're not restricted not only from creating copies for own use, but also from sharing them.

And they call me paranoid...

I am assuming music recordings fall under the same category as DVD video.

Does that include torrenting games?

Pretty much everything does, there's not much distinction between types.

I wouldn't get overconfident, but apparently yes. However, there are caveats, such as with uploading the torrent, which falls under distribution rather than copy creation. These are mostly just theoretical though.
