Obsessed with a Song

I frequently get obsessed with songs, to the point that I'll listen to them constantly.
For example, since Wednesday I've listened to "Let Me Help" by Bad Brains about 70 times. Most of those repetitions were consecutive replays; I might listen to the song 6 or 7 times in a row before moving on to something else.
The weirdest part is that sometimes while listening to the song, I'll want to listen to it. Not in the sense that I'm thinking, "Yeah, this song is great and I'm glad I'm listening to it," but in the sense that I'm thinking, "I really wish I could start listening to song X now," while Song X is, in fact, playing.
So, does anyone else get similarly obsessed? Am I addicted to music in a way that is damaging to my mental health? Is this a symptom of an culture that emphasizes noise and instant gratification over silence and accepting that you'll never be happy so you might as well settle for being a dirt farming alcoholic? Is this a fiendish ploy by the RIAA? If it is, it is backfiring because most of my music is pirated.
I'm the same way. It doesn't last long if it's a single song, but if it's an album, I can literally listen to the same album (re: Warren Zevon's greatest hits) for months on end. That one lasted six and a half months. I don't care if it gives me brain damage. My memory is so bad, that quite often, music is the only thing that can remind me of certain periods in my life.
For example, Frank Zappa's Overnite Sensation reminds me of the summer I moved out of my parent's house at 16 and lived in my dad's unheated shop, smoking pot and fucking my boyfriend who snuck over after school. I managed to cum enough times to the song 'Montana', that the part of the song where dude is singing 'yippie-ay-yo-kay-yay' always makes me tingly when I hear it now.
Paul Simon's Graceland reminds me of when we lived by the lake while my dad was the caretaker for a Scout Camp. Graham crackers with honey, the sound of the waves at night, and getting fingered on the pier by this cute jew boy with a lesbian mother.

At the moment, not really...but, according to Last.Fm the song I most listen to is "My Own Summer (Shove It)" by the Deftones
Oh, and John Mayer's Continuum was my break up album for when I left my ex in Oct of 2007. w00t! I brought it out again when I left him for good the next July, double w00t!

yes! oh god yes.... i was going to start a thread on this soon, in fact. for the last few days, i've had In My Time Of Dying by Led Zeppelin in my head (well, their version of it). i'm on my third play in a row tonight, i think, and the song's 11 minutes long. why do i love this song so damn much!?

i also generally get obsessed witl artists or albums. recently i've been totally obsessed with Lamb of God, and have probably listened to 11th Hour about a million times in the last month. i do the same with movies and TV shows, too.... i watched all of a series of Scrubs in one night after buying it the other day.

I do rarely get obsessed with single songs. Parts of them make me want to start the sogn all over to hear it again. More often my obsessions are about musical groups/artists. The ones that usually make me very nostalgic or just has certain elements. These usually have the mentioned effects:
Serj Tankian
System of a Down
Led Zeppelin
Rage Against the Machine
Slayer
Scars on Broadway
Audioslave
Black Sabbath
Songs:
Evil Woman
Behind the Wall of Sleep
Like a Stone
I am the Highway
Wake Up
Roulette
Rock n' Roll (the System of a Down song about a dying rabbit)
Achilles Last Stand
Also, certain songs make me thing of things and I never do find out what they triggered in my head, they just make me feel nostalgic.
@Pure Metal: In My Time of Dying is a great song.
@Neesika: What the fuck and tmi

No, I don't think there is anything wrong with my taste in music. Why do you ask?

Lamb of God are awesome, though I prefer Sacrament (Blythe's vocal delivery is just so smooth, while remaining as aggressive and gravelly as any of his competitors). "Redneck" was an obsession of mine a couple years ago, and what got me started on them.
i do the same with movies and TV shows, too.... i watched all of a series of Scrubs in one night after buying it the other day.
Come to think of it, I do tend to binge on other things (TV shows, novels by a certain author, types of food or candy) as well. Maybe it is just a personality quirk.

When I buy a new album I usually listen to it about five times straight. Mostly it's just to figure out what I really like: some music is catchy but wears thin fast, other stuff doesn't strike me the first time I hear it but I grow to really like the second or third time around. Specific songs I usually don't listen to over and over again.
@Neesika: What the fuck and tmiYou'd better put me on ignore now buddy, cuz I'm the fucking Empress of tmi. Also, how about a blue shut the fuck up?
All the time. I blasted Disturbia for a good week. I still am. Oh god...and Toxic. Don't tell anyone.

Having had them pop up on my last.fm a few weeks ago, currently I'm totally obsessed with the band Pin-Up Went Down. They shove so many different elements together in each song, from pop to death metal, and yet it somehow works, and its only when you think about it you realize its so odd to have all these different parts in a song.
Here's a couple of their best songs in full, to which you must listen, and love, or face a painful death involving laz0rz and exploding space kittens.
"Yo-Yo Yes Then No" (http://www.last.fm/music/Pin-Up+Went+Down/_/Yo-Yo+Yes+Then+No?autostart) (I love the way it goes in such an unexpected direction one minute in.=)
"Esthete Piggie" (http://www.last.fm/music/Pin-Up+Went+Down/_/Esthete+Piggie?autostart) (the backing vocals on the chorus I find go round in my head all day)

That happens to me sometimes with really good songs. I remember obsessing over "Crazy Train" and "House of the Rising Sun" (The Animals version)

This song: You Found Me, by The Fray. And why am I obsessed with it?Because it just plainly describes the amount of mental pain I am going through this very instant. It hurts so much, oh so much, that I have no idea how am I writing these words.
I found God
On the corner of
First and Amistad
Where the west
Was all but won
All alone
Smoking his last cigarette
I said, "Where you been?"
He said, "Ask anything".
Where were you
When everything was
falling apart?
All my days
Were spent by the telephone
It never rang
And all I needed was a call
It never came
To the corner of
First and Amistad
Lost and insecure
You found me, you found me
Lyin' on the floor
Surrounded, surrounded
Why'd you have to wait?
Where were you?
Where were you?
Just a little late
You found me, you found me
In the end
Everyone ends up alone
Losing her
The only one who's ever known
Who I am
Who I'm not, who I wanna be
No way to know
How long she will
be next to me
Lost and insecure
You found me, you found me
Lyin' on the floor
Surrounded, surrounded
Why'd you have to wait?
Where were you?
Where were you?
Just a little late
You found me, you found me
Early morning
The city breaks
I've been callin'
For years and years and
years and years
And you never left
me no messages
Ya never sent me no letters
You got some kinda nerve
Taking all our world
Lost and insecure
You found me, you found me
Lyin' on the floor
Where were you?
Where were you?
Lost and insecure
You found me, you found me
Lyin' on the floor
Surrounded, surrounded
Why'd you have to wait?
Where were you?
Where were you?
Just a little late
You found me, you found me
Why'd you have to wait?
To find me, to find me...

I've done that before.
Frequently with live versions of Stevie Nicks's "Stand Back," whether she's performing the song as a solo artist or she's singing it with Fleetwood Mac.
I once played a particular live version of that song 22 times in a row.

I'm in the same boat as the OP; if I find a new song that I really like, I'll listen to it continually. Sometimes I force myself to turn it off so I don't get sick of it too quickly.

man, i just love all of it, including Redneck. i only got into them just before xmas, which explains the current obsession :P (i'd heard of them before, of course, but never listened)

that it is. other versions are good, but Led Zep's has a bluesy groove to it that really makes it awesome

That's my current music crack, too. It's been on repeat for days. The opening piano and first few lines just... affect me so powerfully. I restart the song just to hear them.

Most recently with Runs in The Family by Amanda Palmer.
But that whole album seems to find its way onto my playlist very often these days.
Before that it was Broom People, by The Mountain Goats.

I swoon (I'm seriously addicted to the pain, I guess) everytime I hear the part where God says "Ask me anything" and the singer goes on to ask "Where were you?". I truly love it.

I'm EXACTLY the same way. Right now I'm completely bonkers about "Leave Me Alone" by Jerry Cantrell. Cantrell was the harmonizing vocalist and lead guitarist from Alice in Chains. Great stuff, if you're into grunge you outta check it out.

I've had a hard on for seventies the last couple days. I've listened to every album from the sweet, elo & yes I could download. I'm working on a really monotonous project for a term paper right now and I find this type of music good to work to. Funny thing is my cat really responds to the song Xanadu by elo & olivia newton john.
I've listened to I'm on a boat (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7yfISlGLNU) more times than may be healthy.
