No. I tried to think of 'Babe I'm gonna leave you' played with a Cello instead of a guitar, and I became scarred for life.:D

Cello's fine, but it has its place. I've heard string bands where the cello/violin/guitar/piano were all equally skilled, and liked the flavor of each on its own, meaning that none was superior. There are sounds that every instrument is meant for.

I must say that I am proud to be Zoe Keating, but I can't agree with the OP. This,
Apocalyptica (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apocalyptica)
is all the proof I need. Take an awesome song like Harvester of Sorrow (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHbVLTRuLkw) or For Whom the Bell Tolls (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mNLBaIfZpuY), set it (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVMYJTADyqY) to cellos (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=REMMYSdwtrs) and you've got...a mediocre version of an awesome song.

Sometimes. Their version of "Refuse Resist" is almost as good as the original, but, even then, I'd rather listen to Sepultura.

After detailed scientific evaluations involving loudspeakers, kittens, a medium (wrongly labelled, it should have been a 'large'), and the ghost of raptor Stalin, I have made a startling conclusion. Every song sounds best on a ukulele, with the exception of a small number of 90s rave records which sound best on a bassoon

No one instrument is the end-all, be-all of covers. There are some timbres, ranges and tones unavailable to every instrument. Like what you like -- there's no point in trying to legislate one's preference.

I tried playing my favourite songs on the cello. It sucked, because I couldn't figure out how to hold the bow, and then I figured out that you couldn't play more than two notes at the same time, and then the edges started to hurt my legs, and the end pin kept slipping because I lost the part that holds it in place. And they didn't sound really good because I had a hard time figuring out where to put the fingers of my left hand to get the right pitches.

Thus, I still say every song is best when played on a CD player. Or if you can get one, a turntable.

(Oddly enough, some of my favourite pieces of music -- not songs, as they don't have lyrics -- are for cello: Bach's six suites [especially No. 5], Beethoven's five sonatas [especially No. 3], etc.)

Also, yes. The cello is the most beautiful instrument in existence.

While I'm inclined to disagree since there are many songs which rely on HOW they are delivered as much as the song itself, I think it would be an interesting experiment to have a string quartet have a go at Joe Satriani. Assuming they have the talent and technical ability, of course.

Agreed - I saw them live once. Fantastic.

Hmm. I find that their best stuff is some of their own work, not covers: try "Path" or "Inquisition Symphony". And their version of "Hall of the Mountain King" is second to none.

No arguments on Zoe Keating also being fantastic - I've seen her live as well. But based on the music of Emilie Autumn, I must submit the electric violin into the instrument stakes.
