Sri Lankan Cricket Team attacked!

I'm surprised this hasn't come up yet...

Pakistani police are hunting gunmen who attacked a convoy carrying Sri Lanka's cricket team in the city of Lahore.

The masked men opened fire, killing six policemen escorting the Sri Lankans and a driver. Seven players and an assistant coach were wounded.

The team later flew back to Sri Lanka. There is no word on the identities or motives of the gunmen, who escaped.

However officials said the incident bore similarities to deadly attacks in Mumbai in India last November.

The Mumbai bombings were blamed on Pakistan-based Islamic militants.

Officials said about 12 gunmen were involved in Tuesday's attack on the Liberty Square roundabout in the heart of Lahore.

INJURED PLAYERS
# Thilan Samaraweera (hospital)
# Tharanga Paranavitana (hospital)
# Mahela Jayawardene
# Kumar Sangakkara
# Ajantha Mendis
# Suranga Lakmal
# Chaminda Vaas
# Assistant coach Paul Farbrace

The ambush took place as the Sri Lankans were on their way to play a Test match against their Pakistani hosts at the Gaddafi stadium.

The BBC's Barbara Plett, in Islamabad, says accounts suggest the attack was sophisticated, with one group of gunmen firing a rocket-propelled grenade to create a diversion, while others fired on the convoy.

Sri Lanka's assistant coach Paul Farbrace, who is British, told the BBC: "There was a lot of shouting and people hitting the floor and when I got to the floor I realised that the blood that I could see was coming from me - luckily superficial wounds."

Sri Lankan wicket-keeper Kumar Sangakkara told Australia's ABC radio that he and his team mates probably owed their lives to their bus driver.

"We had an amazing driver who just kept driving the bus straight through all of that to the ground and that's probably what saved us."

The driver of a bus following behind, carrying the Australian umpires, was killed.

# Dec 07: Former PM Benazir Bhutto assassinated along with 20 others at a Rawalpindi rally

Two members of the Sri Lankan team, Thilan Samaraweera and Tharanga Paranavitana, were sent to hospital but later released.

Grenades, rocket launchers and backpacks belonging to the attackers were found at the scene, police said.

Following the attack, New Zealand cancelled a cricket tour of Pakistan due later in the year, and the International Cricket Council (ICC) cast doubt on the country's ability to host high-level games.

"It's difficult to see international cricket being played in Pakistan for the foreseeable future," ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat said in London.

ICC President David Morgan said the attack had changed the whole landscape for international cricket.

'Security failure'

Pakistani cricket was already suffering from serious security concerns.

Last month the ICC decided not to hold the 2009 Champions Trophy there due to safety worries.

It is now considering whether Pakistan can co-host the cricket World Cup, due to be held across four South Asian countries in 2011.

Pakistan invited Sri Lanka to tour only after India's cricket team pulled out of a scheduled tour following the Mumbai attacks.

The Pakistani politician Imran Khan, a former captain of the country's cricket team, said the Sri Lankan visitors had been given inadequate protection.

"This was one of the worst security failures in Pakistan," he said. "The Pakistan government guaranteed the Sri Lankan cricket team that they would provide them security." We are surely in state of depression now Salman Fareed, Lahore, Pakistan

Our correspondent says security forces will be investigating any connections to al-Qaeda and Taleban militants as well as Kashmiri jihadi groups.

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse condemned the "cowardly terrorist attack" and ordered the players' evacuation back to Sri Lanka. They flew back to Colombo later in the day.

Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari also condemned the attack, and ordered an immediate investigation "so that the perpetrators are identified and their motives exposed", said a statement from his office.

A spokesperson for India's foreign ministry urged Pakistan to take "prompt, meaningful and decisive steps to dismantle the terrorist infrastructure once and for all".

But a Pakistani minister, Sardar Nabil Ahmed Gabol, reportedly told private Geo TV that evidence suggested the attackers came across the border from India.

He said the assault came in reaction to the Mumbai attacks, and was a "declaration of open war on Pakistan by India".

Pakistan is engaged in a bloody struggle against Islamist insurgents who have staged high-profile attacks on civilian targets before.

Meanwhile, Sri Lankan authorities are waging their own domestic military campaign against Tamil Tiger separatist rebels.

Could it be the same group that hit Mumbai? Also I don't like the accusations by that minister saying the attack was led by Indian forces. The last thing we need is the region to destabilise even more.

Thoughts?

I doubt it was the same group. Don't think they'd be bothered switching targets like that. My theory is that it's just another random radical group looking for a bit of anarchy so that they can impose their will upon more of the populace without threats of "law" and "order".

It could have been much worse too. They fired a rocket at the bus and missed, they threw grenades under the bus which failed to explode. Can you imagine what would have happened if they'd worked? The fallout if one or more of the players had been killed? My god that would have been politically mind-boggling.

Also, the Pakistani minister claiming this was India is being a dick. Pakistan scares me more at this point than any other thing in the world. I don't think anybody needs a nuclear armed country falling into disarray... or getting into a war with another nuclear neighbour.

Pakistan is falling into chaos. I agree with Sval, the idea of nuclear armed Pakistan going completely rogue is very chilling.

Interesting to listen to some of the umpires that were attacked now they are back home.

Some were talking about how they were being fired on and the sercurity detail had gone and left them to be shot at.

Another one was implying that the government knew about this attack as in all previous days both the Pakistani and Sri Lankan buses had left at the same time but, on this day the Pakistani bus left five minutes earlier than the other two buses thus avoiding the carnage.

Considering there has been no arrests and all attackers managed to get away with ease well who knows. The Government has now decided to shut the gates after the horse has bolted by randomly checking cars coming into the city.

The idea that it was just some random little group seems a bit far fetched. I can't see a gang of mates getting together on a whim and organising this, staying cool under fire, and beating the heck out of the police with assault rifles and grenades, then getting away clean, really.

Presumably it was planned to some degree in advance... perhaps an idea germinated when they expected India to be the visiting team, before they pulled out? Not that they're likely to care all that much, as bad publicity for Islamabad is bad publicity for Islamabad, whoever's getting shot at (so long as they're foreign).

Samaraweera's career better damned well not be over, or I'm invading Pakistan myself, with a cricket bat.

I propose that the Commonwealth stop being useless and have everyone (except perhaps India) pile into Pakistan and sort the place out. No more faffing about with Iraq and Afghanistan and other essentially cricketless places. We could bring the Namibians, Irish, Emiratis, and other crickety types, for good measure. Come on, the bad guys already have half a dozen runs on the board!

This terrorism shit just got serious, it's disrupting the game!

Indeed... the Commonwealth has a deep pool of nutters who are being badly under-utilised.

Oh, we can get the Dutch in, too.

Really, though, this is too much. Attacking cricket! It's almost... American! There's a comparison that'll delight the culprits, I'm sure.

Then they should hear the story of the cricket team's bus driver, who drove through a hail of bullets to get, "Allah willing", his passengers to safety.

Two questions:
1) Are they Jaguars from a former or current commonwealth nation?

2) Do they understand the rules pertaining to the taking of tea?

If the answer is yes to both questions, then the aforementioned jaguars mey be included.

That mental image is simply hilarious.
