Yes vs. yeah.

Which word do you use more often? Are there certain situations that are better for one word than the other? Do you particularly dislike the use of one?

I can't say I've ever paid attention.

Yeah more than yes. But possibly "yup" or a sarcastic "well, duh" or "no shit, Sherlock" when appropriate are also up there :D

Yeah is much quicker to say, yes is a bit more formal. Also, I use yeah as both a response to someone addressing me and as an agreement. Yes I use to a yes/no question, most of the time.

Ex. "Hey, CM!"
"Yeah?

"Man, that guy's a total jerk."
"Yeah."

"So CM, what do you think? Should I listen to more Iron Maiden?"
"Yes!"

Yeah is more unofficial for me, yes more official.

Then let me ask you another question: which word is more "passionate"?

I'd say yes is used more emphatically or sarcastically. Yeah is rather indifferent, default answer when one is not paying attention or really doesn't give a flying fuck.

Yes

I shall do an empirical study to determine objectively the preferable usage:

"ffffuuuuuucccccckkk yeeeeaaaah!

fffffffffuuuuuuuccckkk yeees!"

From this experiment, one must deduce that 'yeah' is superior to 'yes'.

I thought I would be a yes man, but after thinking about it, I do say yeah quite often.. Which surprised me a little.

I use "yep" a lot. I use "yes" when talking to someone formally, like a client or someone older than me or someone I don't know well. My grandmother thought "yeah" was low class and rude so she would smack our mouths every time we would say it. I don't say it often, although I do type it on internet forums quite a bit. (Grandma's dead so she can't hit me anymore)

Did you read what the parentheses contained within the title of the poll?

I probably use 'aye' and 'yeah' on an equal frequency.

If I don't actively disagree with something, that's tacit agreement. So, as long as I'm not disagreeing with you, I'm on board. No need to bob my head and say "yeah" every three seconds in conversation. If I think you're unsure of what you're saying, but have reason to believe that you're right, I'll throw in a "right" once in a while, but that's about it.

This. Same feeling here. I find myself using "yes" with my profs and boss and "yeah" with pretty much everyone else.

I sometimes replace the positive word with its function in the sentence:

"Do you like ice cream?"
"Affirmative."

"This movie is really boring."
"Acknowledged."

But not very often, because that just sounds weird sometimes. I use "yeah" and "mm-hmm" with about equal frequency, "yes" somewhat less.

I normally us "Ja" to indicate the affirmative.
