It does sound like trying to make a souffle rise a second time. The Three Stooges belonged to the 40's and 50's. They were funny then and the originals were superb. Johnny Depp is a fine actor but he isn't really suited for slapstick comedy. And as for "Dead Man Walking" and "Mystic River" Sean Penn.....what a waste that would be.

What kind of a movie you can make from Monopoly?

That sounds terrible. Johnny Depp might do alright with the slapstick, he did OK with it the Pirates movies, but Sean Penn ..why? Didn't they see him explaining Chris Rock's jokes at the Oscars? The man's a black hole for funny.

Any new 3 stooges movie will fail. It will insult the originals as an obvious derivative work with 1/10th the classic humor and a heaping helping of the usual garbage that passes for "comedy" today.

The original Three Stooges was garbage, so, this is by extension, going to be worse than garbage.

Bah. Old-school slapstick at its best. The 3 stooges, the Marx brothers, and the "Road To..." films with Bing Crosby and Bob Hope are all excellent comedy.

Well of course a female would think that the Three Stooges was garbage, and males (like myself) will hail them as one of the worlds greatest comedic act of all time.

I can't find clear enough information on whether this is a biopic or not. The Three Stooges isn't a premise, it's an act, so that lends to my confusion. There is no Three Stooges "continuity" so to speak. Each of their shorts had a different premise/setting and no real relation to the others except, of course, for the act-the basic personality of the members and the slapstick interaction.

The Farley brothers clearly are heavily influenced by The Three Stooges, so if anything it will really be a labor of love on at least some level. Whether that translates into something watchable is a different story.

If it's a biopic, that's a different thing. That's kind of an interesting story to tell.

Hollywood will eat itself. Johny Depp is very good at slapstick in Benny and Joon where he play a character who models himself on Buster Keaton. He would probably have made as good a job of Chaplin as Robert Downey Jr. Sean Penn has only ever been funny by being in films with Madonna, that are so bad that laugh is all you can do.

As an act the original Three Stooges could only sustain short films, slapstick in my opinion cannot carry a full length film.

I don't think I approve. Though, I would like to see the rebirth of the sight gag and a pie fight scene might please me enough to offset my misgivings.

? I've always been in awe of Depp's versatility, but if he pulls this off, I will be astounded.

does it really matter?

depp is the best actor of his generation and quite a nice piece of eye candy. if they can get him to do this movie his participation may be enough to get me to go see it.

if he can make a movie based on a ride at disneyland something worth watching he can do it to the 3 stooges too.

This doesn't make any sense. How is Shia Leboeuf not involved in this movie? I thought he was the one tasked by Hollywood to assassinate each and every one of my childhood memories. I don't believe these rumors until I see Shia.

Anyone who hails the Three Stooges as the greatest anything needs their head examined. There is much better comedy and slapstick out there (Rik Mayall comes to mind).

You cannot put the Three Stooges and their unintelligent buffoonery in the same class as the witty and intelligent Marx brothers or Crosby and Hope. The one thing is simply not like the others, it's like putting the baying of hyenas in the same class as an oratorio - doesn't work.

He may not have given up on them, but according to the Stooges' bio page, after Fine's stroke, the Stooges never got together as a comedy team again.

Eh true, but if you go to the Wiki Page, there was one final Three Stooges team.

Moe Howard, Emil Sitka, and Curly Joe DeRita 1975

Well, if I had to go with the official 3 stooges site, or wiki, I would believe the official site when they said Sitka was discussed but they never got together. Even your source said he never appeared on film with them.

The problem with an established comedian, especially one with a developed shtick, performing as someone with such a notable and popular shtick is that it's hard to separate the two, that it would be Jack Black as Curly, or a very Jack Black Curly (not different than an impression like Mel Gibson in Lethal Weapon).

You can have a comedian who really tries to commit to the portrayal, like with Jim Carrey as Andy Kaufman, but it's rare and difficult. Which is why you have not necessarily comedians but 'actor's actors' playing Moe and Larry.
