Fray Bentos pies are awful. My mother insisted on buying them for me when I was at uni, I used to trade them with a housemate who had no taste and spent his life playing Neverwinter Nights and so had no time to cook.

Filet mignon, baked potato and lots of peas, all cooked on/in my new stove, which was delivered and set up today by burly efficient men from Sears. I now have a stove with five burners. And a convection fan thingy. And a window in the oven door. And a light. So I can watch my cookies burn, not just be surprised when I take them out of the oven 2 minutes too late.

I am very, very, very excited. And yes, also a loser. I don't care. Yay stove! All my prayers to Hebe have come true!

Question for those of you from the U.K.:

What is the state of Indian food in the U.K.? I see curries on your BBC, usually while that tiny ferocious woman yells at people about being fat, and they look somewhat like Thai curries and nothing like most of the Indian food I eat. I know curry is very popular in Britain (at least, television has led me to believe this), but are other Indian dishes prevalent as well? I pondered this as I mopped up stray chickpeas with a bit of naan. I assume there are authentic Indian restaurants, of course... are "curries" an entirely different thing?

:( You have my sympathies. The oven in my first apartment conked out the first time I tried to use it, I had to throw everything away and didn't try again for months.

Tonight I made spaghetti with Italian sausage. Salad before, and cream puffs for dessert.

We are lucky over here in that we have a well established immigrant population from all corners of the Indian sub-continent, so we get Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan curries as well as those from all over India. The quality is all down to economics - go somewhere cheap and you'll get a generic curry made to suit the UK palatte. Invest a bit of time and effort and you can find some spectacular dishes. Recently I went to a place and had a Methi dish, and the owner even told me the type of Fennugreek they use to spice it (I didn't even know what fennugreek was)
I was also lucky to spend a month in India recently and can honestly say our versions are not a million miles away from the authentic stuff, if you can avoid Chicken Tikka Massala
