I notice that there is an archive section on the boards with only one thread. Will there ever be a goldmine'd abortion/copyright law/atheism/other controversial subject threads?
I would be highly interested those quality but entertaining debates which I can use for research :)

You need to switch the date to "Beginning" and they all pop up. There's a number of them in there.

A lot of the good debates can still be found in the WA section. There are several choice bits from back when we were still the NSUN. Check out DRAFT: Animal Cruelty if you want to see some fireworks, some of which were lit by an alt of yours truly.

Go look for some of the old Utilitarianism v Objectivism debates involving Melkor. Those were good on a really high level.

Just out of interest, where did you stand between utilitarianism and objectivism?

That was exactly what I was looking for, not being in any philosophy classes, objectivism is a fascinating subject to me.

More on the latter than the former, obviously. Objectivism has had a huge impact on how I see the world and how I conduct myself on a personal level, even though I recognise the shortcomings on a philosophical level. To me, objectivism isn't really an abstract, fully consistent intellectual exercise but a code of conduct. And in that sense, the way it deals (or fails to deal with) is-ought problems doesn't really matter: in the real world as it exists, striving for one's happiness (beyond mere survival) is the only goal anyone can consistently live by.
As for utilitarianism, I think it never really answers the "why". I am a big fan of J.S. Mill, but he certainly saw the limitations of a pure, Benthamite approach to utilitarianism and wrote things like "On Liberty" (in my sig) which introduce these qualifying factors that protect individuals from pure utilitarian prescriptions.

There will not be, because even the best debates become overwhelmed with either "My sources are better than your sources so you're wrong!!!!" or "My point of view is obviously the only reasonable one so for you to disagree with me is clear evidence of your stupidity." arguments.
