Do you use adblocking software?

Have you installed adblocking software like Adblock or IE7Pro because of the new adverts in NSG?

I have adblock software, but had it for a while, before NSG ads got annoying.

Yes, I do.

Not because of NSG. Because of the way the whole Internet is done.

I also run NoScript.

Have it, use it, hate using Google Chrome on NSG, I use Firefox for the adblocking.

I use adblock, I tried NoScript but then I couldn't use some of the website I usually visit, so I disabled NoScript.

Adblock Plus. I don't know how I ever got by without it.

For a long time, I have both Adblock+, Noscript and firewall site blocking.

I have activated this software on Jolt ads only yesterday, however. The ads earlier were even interesting sometimes, but I can't stand this rush of screen spam. Even the "Advertisement" frame itself in the posts annoys me in roleplays.

I have adblock plus installed, but not activated.
I don't want to miss out on something that might be interesting.
But if ads are going to become more and more intrusive and annoying,
I can just block those when I feel like it.

Did not vote, seeing as the poll did not reflect my position.

Wise choices. I do it for the same reason.

I';ve tried lifting some adbvlocking from time to time, but the ads always seem to be things I'd never wants. For example, if I lifted a video game advertising group, all the ads would be for PS3, X360, and PSP; never for Wii or DS.

I used not to use special software but only block the locations of especially obnoxious pictures. But since today, since these horrible moving ads, I installed Adblock. Seriously, it is too distracting!

I've had the adblock plugin for Firefox for a while, but recently all the adds are getting past it.

If you know some HTML, find the ads in the source code and insert their locations into the adblocker manually. Konqueror is the better browser here IMHO.

A subscription to a good filterset* and regular updates cleans most stuff out. For the remaining, you should be able to click the Adblock button, select items you want to block, and block them. If you use wildcards sensibly, this can be a very brief process.

I was very impressed by Conkeror's Adblock integration when I installed it the other day. Extremely simple and quick.

*The 'standard' Easylist is likely appropriate for most purposes. Open Adblock preferences, click on the "Filters" menu, select "Add Filter Subscription", pick Easylist (or another) from the list it presents you, click the add button, and apply it. Works a charm.

In fact I don't know any HTML. It's one of those things that I'd like to learn, but the person to teach me would be my roommate and he's an ass, and it's a bit outside my studies for school.

Turns out, after looking, that my adblock got reset somehow and I didn't have a subscription loaded.

My adblock was downloaded after OMAC put in the ad under the first post on the page. It just bugged me.

That's why you tell NoScript to make an exception for it...you can just right click and select the specific scripts you want it to keep running.

Not exactly a large sample, but it does seem to confirm what I suspected; which is that if OMAC drive people into installing ad-blocking software they are permanently reducing the size of the audience for their adverts

If you are using ABP simply right click on the Ad att the top, select adblock frame and select the "Custom" radial ... what was default in there as a source works

i dont, but Im seriously considering it now, the ads were fine before, but I get on today, and every first post has a massive ad distorting it, and making it difficult to read....

I really, REALLY, hate it, lol..

Eh never been a fan (never been a fan of KDE overall either) I always lean to FF or Opera to get things done.

Either way

I did not for a LONG time (for an IT guy anyways) it was always "meh"

Then I ran across a situation where I really wanted it (dont remember what) after years of using it now when I go back to a browser without it, it bugs the hell out of me lol

I am not an add-in freak but thats one that one of my only hangups with going to something like google chrome

Wait till it's out of Beta/has extensions.

I agree I will re-evaluate it at that point as well (hopefully they come out with a linux version too)

Though have they realistically released a date for the end of beta? or is this going to be like gmail where the public release is always beta?

Installed it yesterday. The amount of ads was getting ridiculous at that point.
Before, they were amusing, and I had actually clicked on the odd link. But putting it in people's posts, and using up half the page for ads was really taking the biscuit.

Opera has had a 'block content' option for a long time now, but its not quite as comprehensive as Adblock in some ways, i think. ads do sometimes get through, and google text ads always get through... but those are ok anyway.

this is what this thread looks like for me. ad in OP gone, but annoying bounding box still there. Jolt banner taking up way too much screen real estate.

I recently uninstalled adblock plus after using it for a long time. I read there was some incompatibility between ab+ and some noscript feature meant to make sites that depend on google's spying stuff work without actually sending any info to google.

With noscript and cs lite both configured to block by default and only allow specific scripts and cookies, most ads aren't shown anyway.

Have you installed adblocking software..
No, because such functionality is integrated to my browser (Opera).

Took a while to find out how to block the current ad system though because it's a SEPERATE frame FFS: Something from the last century!

Opera has had a 'block content' option for a long time now, but its not quite as comprehensive as Adblock in some ways, i think. ads do sometimes get through, and google text ads always get through... but those are ok anyway.

The block system of Opera is actually pretty powerful, if you know your way around HTML & URLs.

For example, you can block the frame on top of the page...though you have to add the address (which I won't post here) manually through block content -> details -> add

edit:
There's also a 'Kill' button available for Opera which can be used to remove site elements.

You're welcome.

If a few other users are interested and able, who's up for writing a nice easy guide for how to set up adblocking in your browser of choice, or how to use it if it's already there. We could do Opera (guide to how to use it), Firefox (how to install and set up Adblock Pro), Konqueror (just because), Conkeror (ditto), IE7 (if there is one), Safari (ditto), etc.

I can write up instructions for Firefox, if people are interested.
