Detox

So, I stopped smoking (picked it up for a few months because I was drinking so much) and I also stopped drinking for a few days...we'll see how long THAT lasts. More importantly, I've been eating fruit (gasp) instead of just meat, and drinking a lot of water, etc.

So last night, I woke up sweating like crazy out of the blue, and I just STANK. I don't normally reek when I sweat, and I don't normally sweat all over like that. It was like my body said, 'wtf, all right PURGE!'.

So my question to those of you who abuse your bodies...what do you do from time to time to detox?

I'm a creature of complete lack of habit. I tend to go through phases of high and low activity, healthy and unhealthy eating, drinking and not, reading insatiably and not, etc.

One thing that's relatively regular is that since I enjoy outdoor activities and despise the cold, I tend to put on some extra weight in the winter and shed it in the late spring.

The only things I abuse are nicotine from snuff and caffeine from coca cola.
And I can do fine without them.

I know "everyone" says that they can quit anytime they want,
but I go days-weeks-months without either from time to time,
with no side-effects but a slight headache a couple of days after.

I tend to drink water when I detox. Haven't detoxed since summer...Maybe I'll give it another go.

I gave up smoking last year. It was hard for the first few days, but after that, it was fine.

I quickly re-acquired a sense of smell - I could smell everything, everywhere.

I rarely drink alcohol since 1991 - not that I'm above getting a bit drunk now and then, but it's a few times a year. I feel better because of it.

The one thing that forces me to not overindulge in any of these things is the fact that I run a lot. Every day. I got a dog last year so I would maintain a faster pace - he's a Malinois and loves to run.

I'm pretty much the same way except for the weight in winter thing. If I need to quit smoking/drinking/*enter vice here* I find it helps to absorb my attention in my studies (I guess in work for those silly people out in the real world) and force myself to do sweaty cardio for 1-2hrs a day; it seems to help.

I should note that I don't know or even necessarily think this will help if you tend to be a person who is a, umm, person of habit, I guess. Mainly it seems like it helps because it forces me to maintain a consistent schedule and kind of functions as a big reset more than anything else.

well, i used to drink and smoke pot (and do other assorted drugs) at university. i ate like shit, mostly junk food and instant meals, put on loads of weight (i was already hefty), and became clinically depressed and in hospital. i went to live back with my parents 4 years ago, rather than going back to uni after the hospital thing, and i've barely touched a drop or a toke since.

however, i still eat like a pig, and often feel the bad effects from that in terms of joints aching in the morning after getting out of bed, etc. but i rarely feel ill or the need to 'detox', strangely enough

Drink green tea and go to the gym.

Working out regularly (whether the gym or running), makes it painful to be a regular drunk, a regular smoker, etc.

I got a very active large dog with a very high drive, so that I wouldn't have any choice but to run twice a day, several miles each time.

Every couple of years or so, I'll spend a week to ten days eating like a Zen nun. Green tea, water, no meat, low dairy, lots and lots of fresh vegies and fruit, whole grains. Lots of fresh air and twice daily meditation (about 10-15 minutes of no-mind time). That usually helps clear out any accumulated toxins and restore energies.

But then I don't smoke and don't drink as much as some people. I just abuse my body with high stress levels. For some people, 1 or 2 weeks every other year wouldn't be enough.

I don't think I share your idea of what Detox is. For myself I downgraded to chain-smoking cigarettes, and weed. I don't think I want to go into more detail than that.

I don't know about cigarettes, but when I try to clean my system of pot, I have my own routine. Its based on the fact that THC is dissolved in fat.

You begin by drinking a lot of cranberry juice (diuretic) and water. Work out heavily and avoid fats and meats. Then you spend several days being lazy and eating a lot of fat. Repeat this process several times and each time you burn and then replace fat, you lower the concentration of THC in your body.

"tried to make me go to rehab, I said no, no, no..."

I usually drink lots of green tea, work out, cook wicked healthy meals, lots of fruit and veggies, go to the beach and swim/watch the sunset/hike.

best way to keep to a such a program replace bad habits with good habits. Like exercise which can be an addictive habit.

Also temporarily increase your salt intake to reduce getting the sweats. when you drastically reduce meat your body tends to come up with a decrease in salts composition.
this causes you to sweat more.

Fast a day or so, ideally, but generally I don't have the willpower. Swear off alcohol/cigarettes/other substances that are bad for my body for a length of time, as well as sweets and fast food. Try to get my actual RDA of protein while staying under a certain (low) number of calories. Go to bed at a reasonable time and sleep.

I don't, usually.
I don't eat a lot of meat to begin with, my BF being vegetarian and me cooking for the both of us. And I eat a lot of fresh veg and fruit that way as well.
Never smoked, only passive through my mom and my brothers.
And I don't drink a lot, either. Maybe a pint every other week.

I know I sound really healthy now, but with me the problem is portion size and getting some execise... so I have started going for walks on my lunch break. Not too much, just 30 mins fast walking, but I hope it'll show some results.

I'm undergoing a detox of sorts, due to stress related problems. It's kinda harsh, but it really helps the body. Junk food is good, but eating right is even better. That way, one truly rests at night and sleeps well.

Another habit I picked up in Germany:

Hit the showers, then take a brief dip in an unheated pool (there's nothing like cold water in the Hallenbad to brighten your day in mid-winter).

Then get out, go sit in the sauna until you can't stand it anymore, then go shower off the sweat, and hit the pool again.

Do this for a few hours - it really does the trick.

I can't do that. I have a very weak, immune system and winter truly sends me to bed. Perhaps being on the Caribbean for the rest of the year will do me worlds of good. I'll try the sauna thing, though. I've heard it's good for detoxifying the body.

It'll also give your immune system a massive boost.
We used to do that every winter in Germany... I've known colds only once I came to Ireland, which is much warmer in winter but unfortunately doesn't do saunas.

It's the alternation between being very hot and very cold that seems to help.

The first time I did it, the sweat that came out stained the towel - it was gross, but it showed how much crap had built up and needed to be purged.

How long should I do this? I mean, if I decide to do it, on the particular day, how many times would you reccomend I take the plunge in the cold pool and then hit the sauna, followed by the shower?

You're in the cold pool just long enough to cool off - a minute perhaps.

If you can stand it, you're in the sauna for about 10 to 15 minutes.

First time, I did it three times around.

In Russia or Finland, you run out of the sauna naked into the snow, and beat your skin with birch branches - no pool. But I don't suppose we could get you to do that...:p

I'd say don't do if more than 3 times, to begin with. It'll really rev up your body, if you go through it too often you won't be able to sleep for about 2 days.

Don't stay in the hot too long, only a couple of minutes. Quick shock cool down, and what I used to love doing after that was just sit down wrapped in a warm towel and have my feet in warm/hot water, for about 15 mins or so. Bestest feeling in the world.

I believe the process doesn't remove too many minerals. I eat a lot of veggies anyway, I have at least 2 large salads a day with dark romaine, sometimes spinach, all the good dark green (mineral rich) veggies.

Taking niacin is a good way to detox too. Promotes metabolism and all that. Some people become really flush when taking it or other adverse affects, but it won't kill you;).
