In Front of the Queen, No Less

Anti-Social Darwinism

Mario Batali, a heavy-set (read fat), red-haired, so-called celebrity chef uses profanity in front of the Queen of Spain. Royalty is a big meh as far as I'm concerned, but a little respect for the lady would have been nice. In fact, a little respect for everyone there would have been nice.

He used it to quiet the crowd?

Man, if I was going to a dinner that was $1000 a plate, I wouldn't want to be told to shut the fuck up unless it was a very funny comedian doing it.

I read about this earlier.

I think the "offensiveness" of this word is vastly overrated.

The New York chef famous for his orange clogs and "molto" personality allegedly grabbed Andrés' buttocks following the salty introduction to the group of 400, the paper said.

he's still alive?

That sorta reminds me of a song from here I'll do my best to translate on very short notice:

"Out with the fussy, in with the rough"

"Holy sh*t!" - Said the officer
In the inauguration festivities
"F*ck!" - Said the congressman
Right in an extraordinary session
"Motherf*cking great!" - Said the secretary
When he only got twenty percent
"F*cking hell!" - Said the president
Of the charity association
"I can't f*cking take this" - Said Ms. Laura,
Sister of Mary's, cousin of Jethro's,
son-in-law of Logan's, father of Clyde's,
Neighbor of Ashlee,
That I never met,
No clue who she is!"

In short. Not only is that quick translation there to show my leet skills, it's also there to show that, well, people curse. :p

It would depend on the way it was done. By the sound of it, it was done badly.

(It's odd to see royalty that don't start my inner fenian plotting...)

My take is this. They knew his reputation when they invited him so they should not be surprised. You don't want swear words dont invite someone know for having that sort of attitude.

The Royal Family of Spain is still alive?

I thought they were all killed following Franco's takeover. Or am I thinking of revolutionary France?

You are indeed, confusing your history. The Borbouns are alive and kicking and have been, in Spain, for the past 300 years or so. King Juan Carlos I is the head of Spain's consitutional monarchy.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spain

In fact, King Juan Carlos I was the one who lead the revolutionary armies against Franco and stage the take over of 1975.

Of course it is. But I digress. King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofía can be, when it comes right down to it, quite potty-mouthed. Not that they do it in public, mind. But I know they do it, it's in their Spanish blood.

Direct quote from someone else in the same page, commenting in the article. --->

"He's a chef, not a diplomat! Furthermore, this idiotic AOL story did NOT report what else happened, and I quote the Miami newspaper: Batali: Afterward, I went up to the king and I said, `I'm sorry about the foul language." The king said, 'What foul language?' '' Also, the king whistled at the crowd at one point - hardly the stodgy image of a king that Americans imagine. Spain is not a puritanical country."

It seems that they didn't report the whole thing to make it sound really bad, and the KING himself didn't give a dam. I am not a fan of this guy, if anything I only watched one of his shows, but I do hate spins, and politicians by default.

No one is claiming Spain is a puritanical country. However, there is a protocol, when dealing with certain people one has to know how to act. You don't have to be a diplomat to know that in front of a head of state you can't use vulgar language.
