Earth Hour

So on March 28th, we're suppose to turn off our lights and electronics for one hour...ok...and why? Yea, this follows the same logic as "not buying gas for one day" in order to drive down the oil prices. The problem with the turning off everything for one hour is that people A. are just not going to do it, and B. the effect is negligible. People are probably going to use more electricity before and after the hour, getting things done, so that they'll be ready to turn off their stuff for one hour. The same with "not buying gas for a day" idea. More people are likely to fuel up the day before and after, once again making that single day negligible or ineffective.

So in another word, it doesn't really do anything and is nothing more than a way for people to "feel good" without actually doing anything.

Earth Hour = pointless and waste of time.

Thoughts?

An Earth MONTH on the other hand...

Would lead to a complete breakdown in society. So, yeah, it's a useless 'feel good' thing.

symbolic action. It draws attention to the cause.

Does someone else want to try explaining it to him? I just...I don't have the strength anymore.

This country has the attention span of a child with ADHD, do you think people really give a damn about the cause?

I've been meaning to set aside an hour a day to just read anyway. If nothing else, this provides an excuse.

People on life support will have a problem with this.

I just think it might be pretty cool to see what the effects will be.

Eh they've lived long enough.

I just think it might be pretty cool to see what the effects will be.

IF there's any effect, I doubt there would be though.

I fully intend on turning off most of the electronics for not one hour but eight!

Ironically, those will be the same hours that I sleep...

Even the prematures?

I was kidding. Although I wonder what would happen if a Hospital try to take part in "Earth hour", I'd imagined it'd be alot of dead people and lawsuits...

I think its a good idea, just like Earth Day. I mean, seriously, isn't it SO awesome to have one day in which we should recycle and plant trees and stuff (which 99% of people ignore), so that on the other 364 we can burn coal, drive SUVs, and leave the lights on, guilt-free!

I think we also need to consider what might happen if everyone stops using electricity at once: Haokah would be unleashed upon the world.

That which was once sealed to provide power for the country would burst forth from his age-old prison to wreak divine vengeance upon mankind.

That could ruin April Fool's.

Turning your lights and tv off for 1 hour would probably have an effect if there is still daylight outside and can still do what you would normally do. I could, in fact, turn the lights off right now to save power. It wouldnt cause me to stay up an extra hour later with the lights on.

Earth Hour isn't entirely pointless.

You know what is pointless? Carbon offsets. You're paying someone to reduce their carbon emissions, even though:
1. there's really no way to make them fulfill their promise
2. those who accepted the money and reduced their emissions were probably already reducing said emissions, carbon offset money or no carbon offset money.

So yeah, not the most pointless thing in the world. Even if it doesn't positively impact the environment directly, it'll show the participants and anyone else paying attention that you don't have to be Amish or live in a third world country to survive without television or internet for extended periods of time not devoted to sleep.

Actually, you would buy those to get someone you know that has recently passed away into Heaven, but yea it was still a major scam. Although to be fair, The Vatican and the Sistine chapel cost alot of money...and the Romans Bill collectors were not dicking around....

It would be useful if municipalities got involved and turned off the streetlights.

An hour without light pollution = win for astronomy.

and whats the deal with the 1 minuet of silence for remembrance anyway!?

oh wait I forgot that people can't do nifty little things that hopefully educate people in things like conservation because we are all robots who cannot be exposed to ideas

For every person that is silent for one minute, there is somebody out there talking twice as loudly. Didn't you know that?

Earth Hour misses the target completely. We shouldn't not use our technology, we should find better ways to fuel it.

You have no idea how pissed off I am about hydrogen fuel for cars...
